Show Manti Temple is open for endowments during pageant The historic Manti LDS Temple will be open for endowment sessions every day except Sunday throughout the Mormon Miracle Pageant. Sessions will be held each day, Monday through Friday beginning at 7:30 a.m., with sessions continuing every hour on the half hour. The last daily session will begin at 3:30 p.m., ending before 5 p.m.; there will be no evening sessions. The normal Saturday schedule will continue with sessions every hour on the half hour beginning at 7:30 a.m., with the last at 12:30 a.m. Sealings during this time will be confined only to family files. Among the historic footnotes pertaining to this temple was the first dedication in 1888 during which both public and private dedication ceremonies were held because some of the participants were wanted by federal officials for the practice of polygamy. In recognition of the Temples seventy-fift- h anniversary, a nearSolemn Assembly ly five-howas held on May 26, 1963, which was attended by all Church General Authorities, with President David O. McKay presiding. On June 12, 1976, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony performed a concert at the foot of Temple Hill as part of the bicentennial celebration. With construction of the vistors center at the foot of Temple Hill, missionary services were begun in 1925. A replacement was constructed at the top of the hill in 1967, which is no longer used for that purpose, and visitors are again received in the original center at the foot of the hill. ur Noted author of Mormon music is buried in Manti Captain Moroni and the Title of Liberty are one of the pageant scene highlights visitors enjoy. (Photo courtesy of Daves Studio of Photography) William Fowler, author of the famous Mormon hymn, "We Thank Thee, O God, For a Prophet", died in Manti in 1865, at the age of 35, and is buried in the Manti cemetery. Tuberculosis was the probable cause of the death of Fowler subsequent to his settling in Manti. The hymn has been sung at every LDS Church General Conference since 1863. Fowler was bom in 1830 to John and Bridget Niel Fowler. His father was from Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, and enlisted in the British army when he was 21. He was sent to Ireland where he met Fowlers mother and after they married, they moved to Australia where Fowler was born. Fowler lost his father at age 11 and his mother at age 15. The pageant opens on Thursday, July 11, and will be held Friday and Saturday, July 12 and and continue 13, Tuesday through Saturday, July The pageant is free of charge and performances begin at dusk (around 9 p.m.). Coats are advisable as the evenings are cool. Pageant officials request that no food, drink or pets be brought onto temple grounds. are available. The pageant is performed in Manti on the hillside below the LDS temple, a landmark that can be seen for miles from Utah Highway 89, or from almost anywhere in the Sanpete Valley. Manti lies in the heart of scenic Panoramaland, hours from Salt Lake City, and within a half days drive of four national parks. His parents had both been converted members of the Wesleyan Methodist faith. Fowler, however became dissatisfied with the religion of his parents and went with a friend to hear the "Mormons" speak. He was baptized in July of 1848 by Elder J. V. Long and ordained a priest in 1851. He served a mission in the Deepcar Branch under Elder William Memmott. He was employed at a factory which fired him after hearing of his membership in the LDS Church. His journals recorded much of the persecution and hardships that many of the saints of his day endured, including mob activity. The exact date of the writing of the hymn is unknown, but President Joseph F. Smith remembered hearing it sung for the first time while serving a mission in England (1860-1863- ). The hymn was published in the 12th church hymnbook.
