The family gathered later for a dinner to honor this occasion in the Ftn. Green Over fifty guests were present. I Commentary & Calvin Hobbes Editors note: This heard Garrison Keillor on his National Public Radio "The Prairie Home show, Companion" a couple of Saturdays ago. He is quite a wit as he talks about his fictional Lake Wobegon, hometown, "the small town that time forgot and the decades cannot : improve." He brought up the issue currently being batted around by lawmakers about whether government financial support should continue for public television and radio. The subsidies for the endowments of arts and humanities are also under scrutiny. that Garrison theorized those who oppose government support for these endeavors are the same people who dont bat an eye when buying a $25,000 pickup. ' However, he says, its like pulling teeth to get them to part with $100 to buy a secondhand piano for their chil- dren. Since this is "pickup coun- try," I wondered if he were talking about me here in Sanpete County. I felt somewhat guilty of his accusation. Years ago we were offered a piano off the back of a truck. It was represented to us as a repossession and therefore a great deal. Good deal or not, I wanted to buy one of those newfangled VCRs instead of a piano. VCRs were more expensive then than now. We had paid $50 just to buy a membership to rent movies and VCRs. We ended up buying the piano. Later we bought a used pickup truck. After moving to ' Sanpete we eventually bought a VCR. I havent regretted any of the purchases, not the order in which we bought them. As I think more about it, I dont believe Sanpete could be the object of Garrisons indictment. Here pickups and pianos are compatible. Just go to the Farm Bureau talent finds at county fair time and youll see what I mean. People here can rodeo one night and go to a concert the next. Sanpete mixes agriculture and art. Horses and humanities are not mutually exclusive. Interest in music is not hard to find here. Since my kids lost their last piano teacher, Ive discovered that openings with piano teacher are scarce. So what about support for the arts and the public broadcasting system? I wish there were enough of us voluntarily contributing to alleviate the need for tax fund support. However, I also believe that some funding in this area can be considered national defense. This would be defense against ignorance, illiteracy and intolerance. Perhaps we should try reducing the support and consequently reduce the services. Lets see if we miss it. My hope would be that we would miss the benefits of public broadcasting and the arts to the point of demanding full service back. Personally, I would miss Garrison talking about pianos. Id also miss Click and Clack, the Saturday morning car talk guys. They talk about pickups.... Merrill I- others. The Sanpete County Centennial Commission is holding a county contest to select designs for two Centennial projects which will require two designs separate cancellation from Sanpete County. The Centennial Passport Program, sponsored by the Utah Travel Council and the Utah Statehood Centennial, is designed to encourage visitors and residents to visit as much of Utah as possible during Utahs 1996 Centennial year. By getting specially produced Utah Centennial Passports verified and stamped at officially designated "passport offices" in each county in the state, travelers will be eligible for gifts and prizes. The design selected will be made into a rubber stamp, 1.75" X 2.5", so simplicity is the key.
