Show xK' Page Two - The Pyramid - May 5, 1993 ; ,vi "I It if M (0MlMI ? 'm ' Last week a couple of peddlers came to Mt. so unusual; this town gets hit by a lot of Pleasant. They were-no- t them. While we like to support local business and seldom purchase from the "street vendors," we acknowledge their right to conduct business here. However, they need to comply with all the citys regulations about such activities, and they need to purchase a business license. When asked if this young couple had a business license, they appeared to be surprised that one would even be required. Its ironic that a community so economically depressed is routinely frequented by these peddlers. They sell cleaning compounds, artwork, jewelry, housewares, etc., all of which is supposed to be better than what can be purchased locally and at a fraction of the cost. vendors also provide services, such as siding for homes, asphalt for driveways, etc. Recently, a few residents have been rewarded for their acceptance of these services with inferior workmanship or materials. The main problem with these vendors is, if for some reason the the product is not satisfactory, or the workmanship second-ratbuyer has no recourse but to chalk the episode up as an expensive experience and hope he is not taken in again. The seller is long gone. The company usually unidentifiable. No warranty is given. What is even more of an insult is that these peddlers may be violating not only business ethics but city laws. Take, for instance, the business license issue. We make it a habit to ask to see business licenses when peddlers drop by. The majority do not have them and they are reluctant to legalize their activity by making one of their stops at City Hall. We know because we check. We suggest that you check, too. If there is no license, report it to city hall. We have to assume that these vendors are either blatant law d breakers or dont want to waste any of their dollars on is If this us the should to do business want of case, why any paper. with them? We suggest that legitimate peddlers, and there are some like the apple man who regularly visits the area and has a business license, continue to be a part of the retail community. However, for the most part, peddlers take from the community and give nothing in return. Those who refuse to abide by the laws should face penalties. Bettter still, support our local businesses who guarantee their products, must purchase business licenses, pay utility bills and taxes and in many other ways contribute valuable community services. door-to-do- or or Task force makes 3 arrests , seven-mont- Renowned vocalists plans Spring City performance Letters Blame gun owners make em pay mood cropping up A PHRflllllD 365-58- 0) Published Weekly at Mt.
