PLEASAN- T- Evelyne Johansen has been a strong influence in keeping Mt. Pleasants pioneer heritage alive. She has been an integral part in the citys greatest tradition, the annual Pioneer Day Homecoming Celebration. This years Pioneer Day celebration will be held Saturday, March 28, in the Mt. Pleasant LDS Stake Center. Evelyne Johansen Born to George W. Whitman and Mary Vickrey in Big Piney, Wyo., she was raised on a ranch by this pioneering family. With a strong ancestral heritage, she grew to love history and became dedicated to preserving those things that are important to heritage. She has not only been on the Pioneer Day committee, but has compiled numerous scrapbooks. Her enjoyment of plants and flowers has made her an expert in horticulture. She has always grown a vegetable garden and has taken pride in the appearance of her home and yard. She has won Tribune Beautification Program awards, and has shared her plants and flowers with those around her. She has opened her home to numerous civic events including the Miss Mt. Pleasant Pageant Tea, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Fine Arts and other clubs. She enjoys entertaining and is a gracious hostess. She is also an expert seamstress, producing dishtowels and appliqued tablecloths to be given to friends, family and newlyweds. PICTURES NEEDED FOR MT. PLEASANT HISTORY UPDATE collaboration with the Mt. Pleasant Historical Soci ety, Mary Louise Seamons (daughter of Louise F. Seely), of Orem, Utah, is writing a supplementary history of Mt. Pleasant covering the years 1 940 through 1 991 . Current plans are to have it available for Pioneer Day of 1993. There is no guarantee that all submitted pictures will be used, but we will use as many as we can. B. rs inU-ade- Ron Staker, member of the Fairview Museum Board and Curly Swensen, director, display several paintings donated to the museum. Fairview museum adds new art, other pieces to collection FAIRVIEW The Fairview Museum of History and Art has received a number of new art pieces to add to its collection. The variety of pieces have been donated to the museums collection according to Director Curly Swensen and Ron Staker, board member. One of Utahs most acclaimed artists, Max Blain, Spring City, has donated a watercolor. Blain also did the murals in the museum. Sandra Johnson, a Mt. Pleasant artist, has donated a pastel portrait she did and former Mt. Pleasant resident, Agnes Brown, has donated 13 paintings by her late husband, Mac Brown. Mrs. Brown recently returned to her native Ireland. The museum has also received a watercolor by Vance Allred. Several works by Spring City artist, Robert Carawan, will be displayed including a serigraph color landscape contributed by Terry Curtis. An anonymous gift of seven fine art etchings and one serigraph color landscape by Carawan have also been donated. An oil painting of Sanpete poplars by Sherry Omans was given as an anonymous gift. A fine art etching, "By the Waters of the Sanpitch," by Spring City artist, Daniel Vincent, was also given as an anonymous gift. Spring City artist, Ella Peacock, has donated two paintings, an oil of the Fairview mill and a block print of the Spring City Chapel . The museum has received a Blackfoot Native American buckskin jacket donated by Carma and Lee Lamb, an oil painting by Helen McKinney featuring a harvest scene painted in the 1930s and a mounted collection of photos from 1895 of the county courthouse and Sanpete County officers donated by Herald and Norma Vance. Dean Staker contributed two Navajo sand paintings done by T. Yazzi. The museum has received unique crystal and mineral specimens from former Mt. Pleasant resident, Olena Ream. The collection was donated in the memory of her late husband, Jim Ream. Ken Miller has donated a mounted peacock specimen and Curly Swensen contributed two antique picture frames. Mert Draper, Moroni, has donated old tools and artifacts. The school spelling bee will be held March 5. The District Spelling bee will be held March 11, at 7 p.m. at the middle school. Cody Johnson was the first- - Peak Lone State Forest Nursery will be in the Central Utah area from March 30 to April 3 with "Trees on Wheels". Locally adapted tree and shrub seedlings will be available to ranchers, farmers and others for conservation plantings, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 3, at the Ephraim Lions Park, and April 2, from 1:20 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Gunnison City Park. Trees on Wheels provide a cost effective way of dealing with riparian habitat, reforestation, Christmas tree plantations and soil reclamation. It is for livestock or those managing producing crops. The trees can be used for windbreak protection, wildlife habitat or to enhance Utahs air quality and environment. Seedlings may not be used for landscape purposes. ty Kristine F.
