Copies of It took a lot of effort, but I slowly moved my healthy hand across by body. The throbbings coming from the inflicted hand were not normal, and it was too dark to see, but I knew I could trust the touch of my good fingers. They would tell me whether or not the injured hand had been removed. To my relief it was still there. Still somewhat swollen, and matted with moss over a deep slash where the teeth marks of the eel had been. I couldnt remember receiving the slash marks, but figured they had something to do with Carolines treatment of the wound. I didnt know what Caroline had done, but I did know that with the decreased swelling and temperature, the hand was healing. With my anxiety gone, I suddenly felt very tired, and gladly let myself fall into a deep, peaceful sleep. There was soreness, but no pain in my hand. The chills and high fever were gone. In fact, I felt pretty good, except for a gnawing hunger in my stomach. With little effort I turned by head towards the lodge opening and the fire. Caroline, her back to me, was crouched over the fire, stirring whatever it was that smelled so good. Whats for breakfast? I asked cheerily. Caroline spun around and faced me, the stirring stick still in her hand, the surprised look on her face quickly changing to a bright smile. Again I was taken back at how good she looked; even after I dont know how many days on a deserted island, she maintained a fresh, clean appearance. In fact, the extra sunshine had only enhanced her good looks and vibrant health. Youre awake! she exclaimed. And mighty hungry. I dont know what to say, she said as she looked away. Say you will. I cant. Another long pause. I knew, or at least I thought I knew, that she loved me too. But something was wrong, terribly wrong, something she didnt want to talk about. My timing had been bad. I had made a mistake, one that I didnt understand. Whats for breakfast? I asked, hoping to take our conversation back to where it had been a few minutes earlier and end an awkward predicament. Without hesitation, she followed my lead, scooting towards the fire. Waitll you taste it., been sim-mering for two days, just waiting for you to gobble it up. Using what appeared to be a crudely fashioned wooden spoon, she stirred the contents of her now steaming cauldron one last time. Sure smells good. What is it? Original recipe tortoise goulash, she said proudly. I realized her blackened cooking pot was the inverted shell of a fairly large box turtle. Beside her was a smaller turtle shell, apparently my L bowl. Lots of turtles on the island, said Caroline. Easy to catch, good to eat. I had never eaten turtle before but figured that if it tasted half as good as it smelled, I was in for a real feast. Caroline filled the little shell from the big one and carried it to me. THISTLE: FOCUS ON DISASTER Scout works on THESE OUR FATHERS Eagle project SAGE OF THE SANPITCH FAIRVIEW Travis Perry is spearheading a drive to distribute a Vial of Life to each Fairview home as his Eagle project. Scout Troop 500 will deliver the vials during die Christmas vacation in the Fairview City limits. The Vial of Life is a simple, cost-fre- e method of making a persons health record available in the event of an emergency. Inside each vial is a form for family members recorded medical information . The vial is hooked on a refrigerator rack and a sticker placed on the homes window. Then, if there is an emergency, EMTs will know to look for the vial of information in the refrigerator. The refrigerator was chosen as a storage place because it is simple. Just about everyone has one, it is almost always in the kitchen, and easy to locate. City police, firemen, EMTs and ambulance attendants serving this area are aware of the program and have been advised to look there first for important information when making emergency calls. It is expected to be helpful in saving time in, a crisis. There is no cost to participate. Fairview residents who havent received a kit by Jan. 1, or anyone living outside the city limits who would like to participate may call Travis Perry, Kits are provided by the Altrusa Salt Lake City, an inClub, ternational womens service club of business and professional women. Travis is the son of John and .Colleen Perry.
