Show COUNCIL DOINGS all members of the council mayor and recorder were present at the regular meeting last evening rasmus nelson appeared and requested that tile the city clean the ditch leading to liis his place on I 1 ast 1st st west st in the second ward claiming the water is polluted referred to committee on irrigation the committee on laws and ordinances offered an ordinance granting a franchise to david eccles trustee his successors and assigns to build and operate an electric railway on the streets of brigham the ordinance was seconded placed upon its various readings and unanimously passed granting the franchise A written opinion was received from attorney J D call respecting the legality of paying the increased salaries of certain appointive city officers which wore were made eff effective active jan 1 1910 the opinion stated that such increased salary should be paid unless a suit was brought to restrain the cit city y from so doing opinion ordered filed the following statement was pre dented and made part of the record brigham city utah march 9 1910 to the 1 mayor and co council binell brigham city utah gentlemen that a wore more harmonious relation may exist between the council and city officers and feeling that the cotys best interests are represented under such conditions we the republican members respectfully report are ready to act on the mayors lap appointments point ments of city officers and that we will confirm any and all of the ip appointments point ments we feel advisable for th the e cites best good provided however the mayor will promptly name clr to fill positions where non confirma tion is made and continue to do s so 0 until all tile the appointive positions ot of the city are named and ratified by the mayor and council respectfully submitted J 11 II HORSLEY it if S LARSEN it J HANSON chairman of committee on streets reported that a temporary permit was given christensen Cliris knudson and fishburn sons to occupy a portion of the street in front of their places of busl business ness upon which to store building material reported also that the railroad officials and county commissioners had agreed to operate cooperate co with the city in protecting tile the fiela aleia owners from high water in watery lane by improving the road also reported that a temporary agreement had been made with N P lindholm to take a limited number of loads of gravel from court house excavation excava Uon to be placed at certain points within two blocks of coult house it at the rate of l ac per cubic yard report accepted street supervisor was authorized to negotiate with the contractors at the court house for the delivery of such amount of gravel as the city needs for improvement of streets and park north ot of court house at the rate ol of per cubic yard the committee on electric lights presented a report of the condition ot of the plant and made a few recommendations ions which include the building of another pipe line to increase the power also that the salary of II if pl M I 1 iggins figgins collector ot of lights be increased to per year also that theartres theatres the atres and amusement halls be ed on a meter system and that where meters dieters are installed in private residences a special wire may be strung to furnish power for flat irons washing machines etc which shall not be measured by the meter dieter report received and filed J 11 IL horsley II offered an amendment to the report as follows we report the engagement of arthur as superintendent of electric lights at a salary of per month and station men julius wright john S christensen and lars Mo for the years 1910 1911 at 4 salary of 70 per month the mayor ruled the motion out of order on the ground that such an ail amendment should come from the committee the other member of which J D mcmaster was not prepared to second the amendment the recorder was instructed to write the attorney general and ask ash for his opinion as to tile the legality of paying the increased salaries which went into effect jan 1 1910 to officers of the city heretofore appointed recorder was also instructed to deposit 1000 to the credit of the water works sinking fund water works committee commett L e was authorized to purchase S e such water pipe as the city may need he monday following the regular I 1 meeting was designated as committee night A number of claims were allowed I 1 I 1 |
