The simple things in life are often the most neglected. This neglect is costly. Some studies indicate that if houses had no windows or outside doors they would require 70 percent less heating fuel and 46 percent less air conditioning fuel in most parts of the country. Of course a house with no doors or windows would be about as exciting as living in a Utah winter fog bank year round. Even in normal homes (the kind with doors and windows included), plain untreated windows account for 40 percent of the homes heat loss. In dollars, this means that about $250 worth of energy per year goes out the window of the typical home with single pane, bare windows, according to Dr. Leona Windley, housing and interiors Extension specialist at Utah State University. Although storm windows are a popular energy conservation item, people often forget that less expensive home made interior window treatments can be just as effective, as long as you create a trapped air space by sealing all four sides of the window treatment. The insulation value of the interior window treatment itself can create greater savings, Windley says. She says the addition of interior window treatments such as insulated Roman shades, insulated shades, window blankets or winwell-insulat- dow quilts can raise insulating of a bare window value from 9.9 to 16 or more. Specific depend on the materials used in the window e) treatment and the way it is mounted and sealed to the window area, she says. Windley has received a national award for energy innovation from the U.S. Department of Energy for her work with designing instructional materials to construct these energy efficient interior window treatments. She developed an instructional package containing a booklet, slide tape presentations and instructors guide to help educators and consumers construct window treatments. The materials are available through USU county Extension offices. jects. GLINES Business Administrator Check Social Security number To protect their Social Security earnings records, people are urged to compare the name and number on their Social Security cards with the name and number on their pay stubs in December and the Form W-- 2 they receive in January. The name and number should be exactly the same. If the person discovers that the Social Security number on his or her pay stub is different than that on his or her Social Security card, he or she should ask the employer immediately to correct the wage records. The Social Security office should also be notified so that Social Security records can be corrected, if necessary. Many people do not realize that the Form W-- 2 is the primary means of reporting their earnings to their Social Security earnings record. Each year earnings are credited to records by matching the number and names on the Form W-A misplaced digit or letter can make a difference, and Social Security is forced to spend costly manhours attempting to reconcile the reports to the proper earnings records. In some cases, because an incorrect name or number does not match, the earnings cannot be credited. 2.
