Show ' DECEMBER 23, 1986 DA K Prep wrestling Darts, Vildiig shine at Viking Invitational By KEITH DUNCAN VIEWMONT The annual Viewmont High Wrestling Tourna- ment concluded last Saturday evening with Sky View High winning the team championship, but was also the scene of several sustaining efforts of local wrestlers to conquer coveted state championships. Davis Clint Allen and Laytons at the Viewmont Invitational. Mike Barnes battle in the finals of the the Bobcats piled up 22P2 points to beat out Davis High for the team title. Davis saw six of its wrestlers make the finals, with three of them winning titles and three taking second place. i The remainder of the team standings went as follows: third, Evanston 145; fourth, Viewmont, 121; ! fifth, Highland, 104.5; sixth, Layton, 100.5; seventh, Weber, 97; eighth, Ben Lomond, 65.5; I ninth, Springville, tenth, Bonneville, 64; eleventh, Bountiful, 64; twelfth, Bear River, 45.5; North Summit, 33.5; Timpview, 64-- 5; 29.5; American Fork, 28 and Woods Cross 28. ; route to earning the title. Smoot, who is seeking the state title at 155, is now 13-- 1 on the season. Smoot, whose family has lived in the mideastem United States for the past three years, moved back to Utah at the start of Shandells junior year. The Viewmont athlete says' he wouldnt have minded staying back in the Ohio area only to get that much more experience for college. But Im glad to be back in Utah because this is home. All my brothers and sisters graduated from Viewmont High and thats something ward to. Ive always looked for- Viewmonts Bart Thompson, the second year head coach, was proud of Smoots efforts as well. Layton High gained what Stan Buchanan called a key victory for our program by beating his old coaching partner Mike Hall and the Bountiful Braves in overtime on Friday. Craig Hansen was just happy that his kids stayed in the game against a team loaded with big, good athletes. Davis Jeff Isom had to be pleased with his teams perform-anc- e as they gave Sky View a tremendous run for the team title. The Darts had several young wrestlers come through with flying colors in the tournament. Dan Stevenson, the won it all at his weight, beating Lonni Kendall of Weber in the Prior to the championship bout, Stevenson had three pins in his victories. Stevenson is the kind who comes and does his job and goes home which is exactly what he did on Saturday night. fin-a- : !i " ls 33 5-- 1. The Darts were continually im- pressive in the lighter weights as Todd Harris, a junior, took third in the 112 weight class. But perhaps the biggest surprise of all was that of sophomore Don Kranendonk who took home the championship at 1 19. Don wrestled the second-see- d to start the meet, beating Scott Montgomery of We-bHe then beat Don Benedict of Layton and finally Gene Bills of Ben Lomond to get in to the finals. Kranendonk survived an overtime victory over Sky Views Bobby Low to win the title. Hes got heart, said Isom afterwards. Davis saw two second places come from both Russ Porter and Maurice Harker at 126 and 132 re- spectively. Harker showed a lot of courage in his championship bout by allowing his opponent to escape on purpose and trying to go for the takedown before the match ended. Clint Allen lost a 3 match to Laytons Mike Barnes in the finals of the 167 pound class. Barnes was ranked eighth when the tourna- ment started but surprised a lot of people in winning the tournament. Rob Warden was Davis third individual champion as he won 2 over Springvilles Wes Tallon in the finals at 185. Warden had two pins in the first two rounds. Sean Smith placed fourth in the it heavyweight class, x Besides Barnes winning it all at 5 167 for Layton, the Lancers saw Mike Brown take third at 98 pounds, Tom Moore get a third place at 145, Darrell Webb capture R fourth at 155 and Tyler Sessions x ended up with fourth at 185. Bountifuls Jeff Black made a fine showing at 105 by taking third over Jason Zickmund of Weber. Shane Olsen took fourth at 126 and Richard Eggett gave the Braves a third place showing at 155. Earlier Clearfield had beaten Kearns. But the loss to American Fork was a moral victory in many ways because of the kind of team the Cavemen have. It was a tired-ou- t DAVIS HIGH Davis High basketball team that still managed to pull out a 3 victory over Box Elder on Saturday night. The Darts had hustled from be- 75-6- Brigham City in the fog. i We didn't play well against Box Elder but the kids stuck in there and eventually had a 5 lead after the first stop. Davis was up 36-3-0 at the half and pulled out a 54-4- 5 lead after three quarters. 21-1- Jeff Pearson continued his torrid scoring pace by getting 22 against Judge and 25 more against Box Elder. Earlier in the week he had 36 in the overtime win over Layton. Curtis Stoddard, the Davis High workhorse, was credited with 13 points against the Bees. But the Lancers rallied to tie the score as Ngai Stevenson banked in a shot, followed by three more points from Wes Nance and finally a shot by Stan Banks with 4:15 remaining. Albert Chappell made it nine unanswered points and a Layton lead with a jumper soon afterwards. Layton went ahead 66-6- 2 on two Banks freethrows with less than a minute to go, but Bountiful came back to tie the score at 66-6- 6 all on a pair of baskets from their center, Chad Rigby. The Lancers had a chance to win it in regulation but a Robbie Trujillo jumper rimmed out of the basket. Rigby hit Bountifuls first and only points of the overtime right off the bat. The Braves had a tremendous chance to put the game away with 40 seconds left but Joey Covey missed a one and one and that set the stage for sophomore basket Chris Trujillos three-poiThat out of came no where. ,that shot gave Layton the lead and sent the Layton crowd in a frenzy. Bountiful's final shot attempt was blocked and Layton had finally won a close one. Banks led all scorers with 24 points including a pair of three pointers. Chappell finished with 1 1 points and both Stevenson and Rob Trujillo each had nine. For the night, Layton canned while Bountiful five had none of them.
