Just how long will they stay perfect? Both coaches hope it lasts through plenty of their respective schedules and of course thats where it reallv counts. Davis will face both Roy and Bonneville when they come back from the moritorium, right before they enter league play. Im not complaining, thats for usre, said Robison, But the kids have a long ways to go and they know that. Our league is going to be difficult, maybe one of the most difficult league schedules weve faced in years. Bountiful may have a losing record, but no one can tell me theyll lay down and play dead in league. East may be the best there is and Viewmont has to be taken seriously with a record like theyve got. blowout. The 1986-8- 7 edition of Lady Falcon basketball is what Jones calls the fastest team Ive ever put on the floor. In addition to great quickness, this team also has the height as Joy Trussell, Promise McIntosh and Cathy Kelsey all or more. hoover six-feKelsey started as a guard last season and now plays closer to the basket as a junior. Trussell, the only senior starter, played guard as a sophomore as well. McIntosh possesses plenty of quickness herself, despite playing the center position. Sophomore Kim Hill and junior Amber Poll man the guard spots and despite their youth, amazing make very few mistakes. This team is especially fun to watch either breaking an opponents press or putting one on themselves. Jones, who has led two teams to championships and a couple of others to second place finishes, says she has never had a team peak out and doesnt believe this present crew will either. Theyre getting better every et have at least three scorers." The said Jones, Theyre learning everyday. Its such a fun group to work with because theyre so excited every day they come to practice. They have that special kind of inner drive and enjoy challenging each other. This team isnt content and feeling they have it all won. But Jones is surprised that her team is playing as well as they are e They (the team) understand team still hasnt entered a tough league schedule and they havent made the state playoffs, but Jones says because of their hard work and intelligence theyll do well and continue to carry on the impressive tradition that follows the Lady Falcon green and white. Were happy about our past said success this Jones, But it all gets thrown away once we start league play against the likes of Layton, Weber, Bonneville and the others.. At times the Viewmont success story has been the best kept secret in the state. Last week a Salt Lake newspaper ranked the top five teams in and didnt even mention the Vikings, despite their track record this year. Teams like Roy got a rating and last weekend in Roy, Viewmont made the Royals their ninth straight victim. To be truthful, it doesnt really bother me that we arent rated, said Clyde Nelson, now in his third season with Viewmont, It just gives us a little more time to sneak up on people. In describing Viewmonts success so far, Nelson said his club is doing a little bit of everything that it takes to win. Right now weve got the size, the quickness and the shooting ability to beat the good teams. The talent is there for sure. But what makes this team much better than last years is that the kids have confidence in themselves. I told people to start the season that we could be good if we learned how to win and theyve definitely learned how to do that. Weve done things real well in the three or four that have been close. The kids have used their heads. Im impressed too with the balance on the team and the depth. Four different kids have led us in scoring and in the past five games 1986-8- 7 pre-seaso- 4-- A weve had four 9-- dont count out Highland and Woods Cross who could beat any team on any given night. Semi Annual Starts Monday 8:30 a.m. Shoes for the whole family double-figur- e Viewmonts depth has been a key. Take last week against Taylorsville for example when Jason Bumingham went down with a twisted ankle. The Vikes were fortunate to have Curtis Call come off the bench to fill in admira1 v against a good Taylorsville team. Scott McIntosh, a senior like Caill, gives 'Viewmont even more depth. McIntosh, along with Call and Bumingham give Viewmont some excellent quickness. The forwards, Bill Crowther and Scott Bland are 4 and might be as quick as most of the guards. Crowther and Bland have been major success stories throughout the preseason not only in their scoring ability, but their commitment to play good defense. Second of all, I feel confident going into league because of our shooting ability. After eight games from we were shooting three-poirange, 50 percent from the regular field area and 73 percent from the line. Hopefully that will get even better once league starts, said Nelson. It will take anything Viewmont has to survive in a tough Region Four this winter, despite their glossy 0 record. East might be the team to beat, Davis is 6--2 and as quick as last year, Bountiful will jell in league and make it tough and me. If 1 carry on during a game, they know I mean business but they know too that I appreciate them as much as anyone does. To my knowledge there isnt a problem on the team in terms of relating to each other." The big question posed around the school and certainly its followers within the community is whether the Vikings can continue their winning ways through league play. Nelson said he was confident the team would keep things going because of two primary things. "First of all, theyre an unselfish bunch and winning usually surrounds those that are like that. They dont care who scores the right now, mainly because of the youth on the team. I at least expected a few more turnovers to this point, but its amazing how successful theyve that high school teams usuall been in not turning the ball over, We have half as many turnovers The present group of kids appear now as we had at this point last quite close to Nelson, the latter season. having mentored them for three Theyre successful too because years now.
