Show OCTOBER 28, 1986 L, Smiths actions tell all Lakers power to 44-- 2 win over Lancers By KEITH DUNCAN It was one late BOUNTIFUL summer afternoon in 1984 when Don Perkins closed up his office and worked his way to the gridiron up on the hill. Perkins, who once played prep football himself, appreciates talent when he sees it and needless to say was impressed with what he saw that afternoon. The strong impressions came from a sophomore running back by the name of Sid Smith. He had all the attributes of a great back, said the Bountiful High principal, he was strong, he had the speed and he could pick the holes. He just had that extra special sense that good running backs have. I thought he was outstanding. Perkins said he looked forward to meeting Smith and a few days later they bumped into each other in the hallway. When you see somebody like that you immediately want to meet them and know more about them, said Perkins. I got that chance and found Sid to be a very pleasurable young man with a great personal it y . You could sense he had a lot of pride in himself and in talking to him, I could tell he cared about others around him. But that hasn't always been such an easy thing to do this season with the injuries that have beset him. He played with a nagging ankle injury against Layton then suffered a dislocated shoulder against Weber the following week. The Bountiful fullback had to sit out the next few games, which in itself was like trying to keep Communists out of East Berlin. But it was as Smith said, I wanted to play, but the future of our team was more important to g te Wall. 213 and no talk, said He befriends everyone mostly by a positive example. Thats one good reason why the coaches at Bountiful have Smith aiding them in weight training classes for the underclassmen. Hes a friend to many and the respect is the highest. A lot has been done to document Sids athletic ability, but his presence means so much more to us than just yards gained. Ill never forget, for example, our quarter-fingame against Alta last year. Sid sprained his ankle on the first play of the game and after he left the game, Ive never witnessed a bunch of kids be so affected by the departure of one player. It wasnt just the physical part of it, but they were losing their leader. It was as if they were saying, Whats the use, why should we go on? The entire first half was totally flat without him. But the doctors did a good job wrapping Sid up and he came back al the second half, maybe And it was just that. Smith put speed. But talk about a lift the pieces back together again with when he did come back. He had the the patience of a champion. With Smith back and healthy, said Wall, Were a threat to win any game were in. And its good to have him back during the critical part of the year. Offensively he gives a boost that is hard to put in words. He does things out there that coaches dont coach. He has the ability to not only run over people, but then can run away from them. Not many high school backs posses that kind of ability, its usually one or the other. e football Sid is a make no about question player, big-tim- Mr. Perkins may have started the 1984 year watching Smith in afternoon sophomore games, but he and the rest of the Bountiful 15 (Om Cotyw Cm tract) again. But the game took a different lead after the initial twelve minutes were out of the way, as Layton showed some true character and stuck in there the rest of the way. In fact in the second quarter, Layton amassed 184 total yards to Bonnevilles 10. The big difference in yards meant only 12 points for Layton who went into halftime trailing Layton's two scores came from a five yard run from Sahn Johnson and a 34 yard touchdown pass from Troy Murray to Chris Parrish.
