I'm not positive, since I cant see the parade, but thats how it appears through my tears. Oh, they're not real tears, not ones caused by crying anyway. Well, it is crying in a way, but its involuntary. It's spring again, my favorite season. At least it used to be. think it still is, but I cant see or smell it. I can feel it though. That sense hasnt been affected yet. Let me explain. One morning, not long ago, 1 woke up to my eyes burning, itching, stinging, and running - streams of tears. It just wouldnt quit. I suffered my way through the morning, but by noon, greatly alarmed, I called the doctor. Come in right away, he said, after hearing a tearful explanation of my problem. Somehow. I made my way through the watery streets of town, to his office. I later learned that the streets werent watery. They just appeared that way through the mist surrounding my vision, or lack of it. After one stick with a light on look at my eyes through a little wand-liktop, he stepped back and said, Sorry, I really cant help you. Its an allergy. Youre allergic to spring. Oh no, you must be said. 1 dont have that. I have friends who do, but wrong, "Well dont." you do now," was his unfeeling response. "What can I do? I said. I cant see." His small comfort was, Wait. Time will take care of it." To myself 1 said, but I don't have time. I have to See spring. To fully appreciate it, spring has to be seen, and this affliction has blurred the pinks, yellows, and pale greens of my vision. Trying to comfort myself, I said to a friend as we were driving through a spring afternoon, Oh well, at least I can still smell it. That comment tempted fate. There was more tocome. We had a beautiful Easter lily with sixteen blooms on it It was gorgeous. At least it smelled gorgeous. I drank deeply of the fragrance that surrounded the misty whiteness, and then it happened. Kerchoo! In addition to the running eyes, the you know what started to drip, and felt a tightness in my throat. Soon I had to shut that tall, slender stem loaded with fragrance into a closet in order to keep breathing. I could blame it on a cold. would if that would make me feel better. But if it is a cold, it is a very one, and it worsens when I get close to which right now, is all out doors. blossoms and flowers One friend, similarly afflicted, consoled me with, I hear a snow storm is on its way. Youll feel better then. I always do. I never wish for snow, was my reply. I do now. It came, and awhile. Then the snow felt better. I actually could even see Its not melted, spring returned, and so did my affliction. fair! I wailed to my family. Life isn't fair, was their solicitous response. Thats what you always tell us. I ventured out on an errand. My eyes welled up, overflowed, and the you know what started to drip. Vision blurred, and I groped my way along the street. I feel like Im leading a handicapped person, said the friend who was with me. "You are I thought, "in more ways than one. Spring has always been my favorite time of year. At least up to now. It is full of hope and promise. It tantalizes one with the enticement of things yet to come. I glory in the renewal, and wallow in the sights and smells of its beckoning promise. Not any more. Youll get so you really look forward to, and enjoy winter, my friend told me. When everything freezes I can see and smell. I love it!. Well, hate it. Winter, I mean. love seeing and smelling, but what is there to see and smell in winter? The only promise I get out of it is cold, wet, miserable, and slippery. Ah well, my age must be showing. Why is it that so many of lifes promises seem to come like a d sword? Why does every time have to have its opposite, especially the good times? Even in fair weather, one can usually see clouds on the horizon. But then I suppose it's also true that in most storms, one can see a patch of clear sky up ahead, though that patch may only signal the advent of winter. At least the winter isn't blurry. In my eyes, I mean. Maybe I could even learn to enjoy it somewhat. And I could change my favorite time of year to autumn. Autumn holds the fulfdlment of season. It the promise. Its always been my could become the best time for me, like the changing in my life. There must be clear vision up ahead, just like the calm after the storm. Maybe life is like the seasons in their cycle. Some seasons are favorite, others not. But even in the ones we like least, there is always a patch of brightness, if it is only a promise of things to come. Take winter, for instance. We know it wont last forever. At least it never has. Maybe without blurry vision I could see it more clearly and appreciate what it has to offer. There must be some ecstasy along with the agony, even if all we can see in winter is the promise of spring. Which brings me back to the present - the agony and the ecstasy of spring. But for this year, my spring was rained out.
