Bountiful has a strong nucleus from last years team that barely missed the playoffs while Laytons new head coach Joe Wood is in a rebuilding year while trying to recover from a disastrous 1984 season during which the Lancers won only one game. Bountiful's big, strong defense kept the Lancers at bay most of the game and the Blue and White had difficulty keeping sustained drives alive AT THE same time, Layton s defense showed a lot of promise as it held Bountiful in check on several occasions. Bountiful scored with consistency - but not without diffi -- culty. Laytons "D was tough. Bountiful scored the first time it got its hands on the ball -- - moving 77 yards in nine plays, the touchdown coming on a five-yar- d run by fullback Sid Smith. SMITH was outstanding on both offense and defense, picking up more than 100 yards rushing and getting in on several tackles from his linebacker position. He scored the final TD in the fourth quarter on d a scamper off a trap after a fumble recover by defensive end Erick Bahr. A pass from Covey to split end Mike Steed climaxed a drive for the Braves in the second period. The Braves other score came with 2:50 left in the third period on a pass play from Covey to tight end Chad Rigby who gathered in the oval on the 20 and raced unmolested to the end zone. LITTLE MATT Bombard kicked all four extra points, punted for the Braves and did all the kickoffs. six-yar- 65-ya- 35-ya- Bountiful had another touchdown nullified late in the game when linebacker Jerron Hale recovered a Layton fumble in the Lancers 22 and on the first play from scrimmage tailback Dusty Jacobs took a pitchout and scampered into paydirt. A clipping penalty nullified the score and Layton ended up with the ball on its own 17. A. J. TEGT of Layton recovered defensive teams. They did the things we wanted and I cant ask for much more than that. Several Bountiful players go both ways and Coach Wall said he was pleased with how well they learned both positions and kept their poise. SOME OF those were Dusty Jacobs, Sid Smith, Travis Wall, Mike Steed, Matt Greaves, Chad Williams, Chad Rigby, Erick Bahr, and Bret Parkinson. Steve Badger was also outstanding as a defensive tackle. Laytons Dave Harrison had a standout performance at quarterback, both rushing and passing. Defensively, Laytons two big tackles, Wayne Johnson and Dustin Perry, were superb. Other standouts were Guy Smith, Clint Brower, James Geddes, John Taurone, Boyd Murray and Sonny Morakot. IN games next Friday, Layton will host View-moand Bountiful will entertain Weber at Bountiful. I told the rest of my teammates after the game that we werent going to let any more get away. It was our mistakes that beat us which hurts a whole lot more than if someone just beat us up good. BRENT Hancock admitted that he was giving the Vikings their due credit after watching the films, but he also said, "It was we who beat ourselves. Too many minor breakdowns that led to major things destroying us. Hancock was justified to saying what he did after taking a look at the final statistics. Clearfield ran up 284 yards of total offense for the night compared to Viewmonts total of 120 yards. Clearfield even bought up more real estate in the second half than the Vikes did, but Warren Hatchs crew scored more points and took home the victory. THE FIRST half of the game clearly belonged to Clearfield as they allowed Viewmont possession of the pigskin only four times in the entire first half. The Vikes had a negative three yards total offense in the first half and it could have been worse had Jason not been on his passing 13-1- 2. 27-2- 4 were several times that Davis receivers dropped balls that were catchable. One of Singleys highlights for the night was a touchdown pass to Greg Willard. Singley did have 20 yards rushing 37-ya- to go along with his passing. THE DAVIS ground game managed 158 yards with Curtis Stoddard, a junior, leading the way with 78 yards. Card piled up 53 yards rushing and Mounteer had 7 yards rushing. Defensively Willard had a heyday intercepting passes. He had two of them and ran them back for a combined total of 29 yards. Singley also had an interception. CARTER, Pepo Olivas, Garcia, Leo Ortega, Paul Taylor and a corp of receivers basically are the skil- led people behind Clearfields attack. They were able to pick up some big chunks of real estate last Friday but sputtered badly when it came time to score. The Falcons had several chances to punch in a touchdown just before the end of the first half but failed even to get a field goal out of it. Stopping Clearfield before the half must have given Viewmont some confidence because they came out in the opening of the third quarter and drove 41 yards after a good kickoff return to score their first points. Bumingham hit Nettles on a 16 yard TD pass. AFTER A Clearfield fumble ear- - ly in the fourth quarter, Viewmont went 73 yards for their second score, this time Bumingham hitting Nettles from 21 yards out. The PAT was good and Viewmont led 13-- 6. With just 6:30 left Clearfield mounted a serious drive that started on their own 22 yard line and went to Viewmonts 22. But the hopes of it died when Garcia threw an interception. IT LOOKED bleak then but with Viewmont fumbling on their first offensive play, Clearfield got new life. With just two minutes left, the Falcons went 13 yards for their second score as Carter hit paydirt from three yards out. THERE WAS a timeout from Clearfield to decide whether to go for the kick and tie the score or the conversion which would probably win the game. The decision was the but Garcias pass into the end zone was knocked from Eric Murrays hands and Viewmont stalled the rest of the clock out for the win. THERE WERE some bright spots for Clearfield other than Carters rushing totals. Jeff Folk had a brilliant game as he mounted 8 unassisted tackles and 9 assisted. He also sacked the Viewmont quarterback five times either assisted or unassisted. Olivas had a great second half running the ball as he ran up 47 yards rushing in just three carries. Hancock was disappointed with the loss but was optimistic about the future. WE HAD some good things happen but there was a lot of inconsistent play to go along with it. If our offensive line can work harder to get their timing down, we might have a chance to be a pretty good team, he said.
