THE REASON this and many other small businesses close is a lack of community support. Many small businesses do not have an advertising budget and cannot compete w it h large businesses in attracting customers. They rely instead, on convenient location and-o- r unique products. GENERALLY, these business owners spend many sleepless nights and a lot of money on ulcer preparations. Usually, these people don't expect to get rich, but wish to be their ow n boss and offer a service to the community. But what happens when the community does not support these local businesses? T he community itself suffers more than it realizes. Shopping areas begin to decay and become "eye-sores- " to the community (upkeep no longer becomes important when bills cannot be met). Products and services must be cut back. Jobs are lost. Finally the businesses must move or close its doors. Customers are forced to drive further for needed services. &IL Community activities are cut back because there are not enough local businesses to sponsor the baseball team, parades, etc. name brand quality shoes KATHY Pleskin (who wrote this article for the Roy Chamber Newsletter) asks what can business people do to improve community sup- port? We the residents of Kaysville should be asking ourselves what we can do to support our local businesses. Sometimes we are quick to criticize, but never bother to utilize the local business services that are offered. HOW MANY of the Kaysville shops and stores do you frequent?
