JULY 23, 1985 Lmtm cGm me Family Fimshes Club 4-- H Pi Activity fimmr phone off the hook or simply let By DONETA GATHERUM - LAYTON Monday morning started out normally at the Judkins residence in East Layton. Mrs. Karen Judkins called her aunt, Jane Vernon who works at Hill Air Force Base at 9 a.m. After talking a few minutes, she hung the phone up and started her normal Monday morning routine. THEN THINGS started happening. The phone rang. Mrs. Judkins answered. It was a wrong number. The phone rang. Mrs. Judkins answered. It was a wrong number again. The phone rang. Thats right. The wrong number pattern was repeated. Finally after 15 wrong number calls (10 of the people stayed on the line and talked to Mrs. Judkins while the other 5 hung up quickly when they discovered they had the wrong party), Mrs. Judkins called the service number for Mountain Bell. I KEEP getting wrong number calls, she complained. A disbelieving phone company employee responded by suggesting it would help the phone company if Mrs. Judkins could find out who the people were trying to call. She supplied some information. Tve had calls for pizza, Tanner Clinic, Clinic, many businesses and several for private homes, she told the phone company employee in a most helpful manner. NO. I MEAN we need the numbers that the people are trying to reach, was the reply. Mrs. Judkins dutifully placed a piece of paper and a pen near the phone. She didnt have to wait long before the object began ringing. Fair-fiel- d BETWEEN 9:45 a.m. and 10:18 a.m., phone calls were handled through the Judkins phone company system. No numbers were duplicated. Only one call was intended for the Judkins home. A boy named Jeff called Mrs. Judkins son, Tyler. AN INQUISITIVE person, Mrs. Judkins began asking the people if they were calling from Hill Air Force Base. She discovered every call came from the Base. People were amazed that a woman at home in Layton could answer the telephone when it was a wrong number and tell the caller he or she was working at Hill Field. Several people complimented Mrs. Judkins on the courteous manner she maintained through the ringing ordeal. Some asked her why she didnt take the 31 The C'rowihcr family of Fruit Heights has finished their second annual Family Club. Last year they gardened and this year was camping. 4-- it ring. I FELT 1 should answer and let people know they had a wrong number. Several calls were to homes. One woman wanted to make sure her young son who was home alone was alright. If she hadnt received an answer to her call, she would have been worried, Mrs. Judkins explained. After awhile, the calling spree turned into a strange homemade game. ONE PERSON told Mrs. Judkins he had called the same number five times and had received five different people. Poor person, he probably never did complete his call. After gathering numbers from 3 wrong 1 number callers, Mrs. Judkins called Mountain Bells service department one BIZARRE PHONE more time. Well get back to you. Mrs. Judkins hung up. The phone Photo Deadline Wed. 6 P.M. started ringing again. I HAVE some errands to run, Mrs. Judkins decided. She and the members of her family who were at home got in the car and left for town. The Judkins house was quiet when the family returned. The only phone calls that were received the rest of the day were for family members. THE PHONE company didnt ever explain the strange calling pattern to Mrs. Judkins. People living in the Judkins neighborhood complained that their phones didnt seem to be working properly Monday morning. Mrs. Judkins would smile whenever she heard this comment. Do I have a story to tell you, she would say, mostly to herself. MAYBE THE phone call she made to her aunt on Base started the problem. Maybe it didnt. No one knows. No one probably will ever know. Dont be surprised if you ever need to call the Judkins home that a very pleasant voice answering the phone says, You have the wrong number. Are you calling from Hill Air Force Base?
