Show n i T Trackers Head For Weber This Weekend SECTION AndLwvs InSoccer The Davis soccer team enjoyed a high and a low in last weeks soccer The Darts will face Woods Cross on Tuesday this week and then will travel to Bountiful on Friday. THE LOW came first with View-moscoring a 1 on Tuesday which became the Darts first loss of the '85 season. They played really well and we didnt play well at all, were the simple words of head coach Bruce Bitner. The Vikings took an early lead and eventually led 0 at halftime. Viewmont is now 0 in league play. BITNER has been really impressed with the play of goalie Danny Gatten and the other team captain. Kyle Morgan. Morgan mans one of the halfback positions. One reason the Darts took off to n and are now 1 a is the quickness that exists in the frontline. That frontline is a young one with Kyle Knowles (junior), Chris Angello (junior) and Brad Richins (sophomore) playing on that line. THE TEAM has a lot of potential, said Bitner, Lets just hope its all put together before its too late. action. nt 4-- 3-- BUT THE high of the week took place Friday as the team scored an impressive win over Highland. The victory over the Rams left Davis at 1 in league play. 2-- 5-- -- 7-- year olds. ANYONE, 18 years or older, who would be interested please contact the Recreation Office at 14-1- 5 544-345- 8. Lancers Win Meet; Weber State Meet Scheduled This Weekend In Ogden LAYTON - Theyre off and running. YES, TRACK and field is in full swing as preps have competed in both dual meets and are gearing up for the big invitationals which get underway this weekend at Weber State. In a that gained plenty of local interest, Layton High scored a victory over the defending state champions from Viewmont and nearby Davis High. Layton scored 67 points to Viewmonts 64 while Davis brought up the rear with 42 points. ALL THREE of these teams will be in attendance at the Weber State Invitational which gets underway this Friday and Saturday at Ogden. The women will compete on Friday in the Stevens Brown-Webe- r State meet and then on Saturday the boys will battle in the big Weber State meet. Both of these get started at 9 a.m. In the last week at Layton High, there were plenty of kids who got a piece of the action and a few were more brilliant than tri-me- et j the others. FOR LAYTON it was Darrell Martin who excelled. Fresh out of basketball, this Layton senior took firsts in both the high hurdles and the long jump. He was also fourth in the 300 1M hurdles. With all of that he finished as the Lancers No. point getter. Terry Kealamakia, the defending state champion in the 300 1M hurdles, defended himself in his first 1985 race with a victory in the He also finished second in the highs. Terry also anchored the winning mile relay team which also 1 included John Wagstaff, Dennis Sanner and Lyle Morse. Both Wagstaff and Sanner also did well in the 400 meters. LAYTONS Robert Porter did well in the discus by taking third. As a sophomore he had a toss of 135-- 9. There was a pleasant surprise in the javeline where senior Joe captured first with a toss of 177-That kind of distance this early made head coach, Russ Jones smile from ear to ear. Mid-ki- THE LAYTON sprint relay team took first as Gary Willhyde, Darrel Grey, Joe Christensen and William led that charge. Reed was also fourth in the 200 meters. WILLHYDE took third in the 200 and fourth in the 100. Clint Brower, sophomore, took fourth in the pole vault. CRAIG Stevens jumped f 6-- 0 placed third in the high jump. Jim Geddes was third in the pole vault. GETTING A second in the long jump was Rich Lovelace who also helped the medley take second. Other members of that medley relay team included Don Flitton, Lyle Morse and Scott Nance. Rich Elmore was second in the mile and fourth in the 3200. and all the expci They say that steam is just enthusiastic water so maybe you could call a spring robust just an enthusiastic baseball team. DAVIS HIGH also had some star performances which helped them to gear up for their dual with Bountiful at home on Wednesday of this week. Eric Thompson, the school record holder in the discus, is getting off to a great start as the senior tosser put a throw out 151 feet. At this time last year he was only throwing 140 feet. THOMPSON also did well in the shot put by getting a 49-- 5 mark and taking first with it. Hes coming on strong and is much improved over last year, ttaid Coach Mike Shaw. Justin Julander, junior, was also a star performer for Davis as he took first in the 3200 meters by a long, long ways. His clocking of 10:17 is considered to be very good this early in the season. A time of 9:58 will qualify for state this year. His specialty will be in the 3200 meter, said Shaw, 1 dont think well have him running in anything else. STILL ANOTHER good performance was put in by Dave Daniels, a sophomore, who and took first in the jumped high jump. His best jump in prac6-- 4 tice or any meet before that was Davis performed in the only meet without Greg Willard who was on vacation with his family. The Darts had a bunch of people running out of their events as both coach and competitors were testing for the future. Joe Hawkins, Davis primary quarter-milewas one of those out of his event. He tried the 300 1M where he took third and was on the mile relay. 6-- 2. r, DAVIS IS hurting with injuries already this year. Out are people like Jeff Ohlwiler, the defending state javelin champion. An ankle injury didnt allow him to compete last week and it makes him doubtful for this weekends Weber State meet. just want to make sure he is completely healthy, said Shaw. Ohlwiler is also the defending state decathlon champion and there is a slight possibility he could be out for a lot longer period if he doesnt heal 1 quickly. Also hurt is sprinter Kelly Ryu-ji- n and Todd Malcolm who performs in the long jump and sprint relay. Any more good weather should come as this season the schedule has been moved back three weeks so the state tournament will be played in Davis, Clearfield and Layton appear to have what it takes to be e. their respective leagues again. The Darts have lost some very talented and spirited graduated seniors but they have a contingency of solid kids w ho saw a lot of playing time last year. THE LANCERS have nearly everyone back this spring including a pitching staff that has been throwing very impressive in preseason. Ken Hicks Clearfield bunch also lost a group of talented seniors but they appear to have some young players that will get the job done. The following is a breakdown of each school's inside look: Falcons Are ERIC WEST, who didn't play a lot. is the only other returning We're hopeful that Eric can come around and be a good hitter, maybe fill in as a designated hitter for us. said Hicks. West has the power at bat but had strikeout problems last spring. SENIOR, A put him defensively yet. Matt Taylor is new but Hicks likes what this senior has and plans to use him in the outfield. filling the shortshop position will probably be Darrel Hicks,, the coach's son. Troy Bodily has had some bright moments and looks to be an outfielder and Paul Taylor might take over the catching job, having done some backup work to Dave Peterson last year. JEFF FOLK is hitting well in piactice so far and Hicks is high on him too. he rest of the month w ill determine who and what according to Hicks. There are still a lot of unanswered questions. I AS Defending Champions The Falcons are the defending region champions and are still cherishing fond memories of their 84 trip to Salt Lake City and baseball heaven at Ken Price and Derks. BUT THIS season it probably wouldn't be fair to favor them to repeat, even though theyd like to surprise us. Gone are the Jeff the Greg Folks, the Peterson brothers and a lot of other great talent. Gone too are folks like Troy Markham and Andy Archuletta who were expected to fill some big gaps this spring. In Ken Hicks' words, this FOR league this spring, flicks admitted that the visit to state tournament has created a sense of pride on the team" and also said "somebody will have to take this year's ticket away from us " We will play hard and get after it. said Hicks who is heading into his 16th year as the head baseball man at Clearfield. Clearfield played in three tournament games last season, beating Highland in the middle game. s, spring well have a lot of youth but I feel we'll be competitive." Hicks had over 60 kids come out for baseball and the number is down to 25 We may be playing a lot now. more kids than we have done in the past, the idea being to give a lot of chances to find a few extra players to fill some important positions." said Hicks. CLEARFIELD hadnt played a game before print time but this week they had three game scheduled which included a game against Woods Cross at Woods Cross on Friday, April 12. League games will open later in the month. Clearfield has the trio of Mark Adams, Danny Richardson, and Ryan Fisher returning to perform Shane Openshaw, that is hitting the ball well right now but Hicks doesnt know where to Lancers Smell Tournament BUT HOPEFULLY this be different. turn to baseball playoff fever. They feel confident because nine starters, players who started at one time or annothe are back again this spring. "They've played three seasons together," said Hawkins, So they should know each other pretty good." HAWKINS referred to the last two seasons together and last summer's American Legion team in which all of these kids played together. Already this year the Layton club has picked up their first win. an impressive 1 victory over Ogden. In that game senior James Kortright started and performed well in three inning of mound work. Chris Morrie also pitched vv ell after coming back from not pitching varsity in over tw o years, giving up no runs in two innings. Ayaum Kikhara also pitched for Brad as did Rex Brimhall who did a good job for an inning. ITS SO early to make any judgements, but what I saw in Ogden really impressed me. It takes good pitching to win and thats why we didn't get the job done last year. But the thing that pleased me the most about the Ogden game, was that we swung the bat. don't think we had one kid that walked and only had two strikeouts the whole day. (The game went nine innings.) WE MADE contact and that's what made me happy." said Hawkins, Darn, it's good to see that kind of stuff this early in the season. like it." Hawkins hopes it can keep up. LAYTON has to be strong up the middle with Tom Montano back at second base, having played there all last season. Brian Bailey is back at short with two solid seasons behind him. First base is a question mark with James Batchelor recovering from a leg operation. Batchelor started at first last year but Hawkins doesnt know how long it will be before he comes back. AT THIRD Layton is starting Boyd Murray, a sophomore, but Hawkins is still leaving it open right now. Murray is a solid baseball player and w ill see a lot of playing time. The list of players moves on. 7-- 1 1 Steve Montano. Toms little What does a high school baseball fanatic do if his ticket to play in the state tournament gets lost? I've got eight seniors that have been playing for me for three years and been playing together for two years including last summer. It's a nucleus. Its just like I told them after our last game at Weber High last year, that we got beat up through league play and won only a few games. But told them next year, wouldn't have any (this year) excuses. Weve had good weather in early April which has allowed these three teams to get out and knock the kinks out Par-ry- codd of this week. Perhaps the enthusiasm this spring, a lot more of it than in recent years, stems from the state tournament fever that gripped at least two of these schoolsjust over a year ago.
