Show DAVIS REFLEX JOURNAL, OCTOBER 10, 1984 exceptional. Wow! Layton Blitzes Royals, 35-- 0 By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports LAYTON - For a competitor like Laytons Brad Hawkins, the suffering came to an end last Friday night here against the Roy Royals. -- HAWKINS, Laytons first year head football coach, hasnt been associated with too much losing in his athletic career. As a football and baseball star at Bonneville he knew the small of victory well and later as a collegian he tasted success again as a B YU baseball great. As a baseball coach, people certainly remember his clubs for their success simply because there hasnt been much losing to speak of. PERHAPS ONE of the keys early in the game was Laytons ability to stop Roys offense which didnt even huddle the first series down the field. But the Royals gas ran out and it didnt have a chance as the Lancer defense rose up with (? brilliance. The offense picked up where the defense left off as Layton marched through their first offensive series to score a touchdown. Of course that opening series was aided a lot in the running of Robert Femeau who went 61 yards on his first carry. He didnt quite make it into the end zone, being hauled down on the eight yard line, but a couple of plays later it was big Mike Roberts who put Laytons first touchdown on the scoreboard. FEARNEAU for the night racked up 208 yards rushing, by far his best performance of the season. Robert also scored two of Laytons five touchdowns. I hope sincerely that the kids remember what it feels like to win. Highland is a good football team, but weve got to go with our emotions right now. We must keep em high. BONNEVILLE and Weber are our next targets and its time now to keep this thing going and stay ready for those teams, said Hawkins. Femeau said all the team needed was that first win under their Our defensive and offenbelt. sive lines were great, specially the offensive line who opened up some big holes for me. If I had the money. Id buy them all brand-newatches. w IN HIS first season as a head football coach, no one said it was going to be easy but no one, including Hawkins, thought it would take six games before he and his kids would chalk up the first w. But memory of an 5 season was erased quickly as the Lancers performed with zeal in teaming in together to thread Roy, front of an enthusiastic homecoming crowd. 0-- 35-- 0 THE FANS enjoyed the celebration afterwards probably just as much as the players and coaches did. And why not! This was Laytons first homecoming victory in eight seasons and only the second time in the schools history that theyve beaten the Royals. After the game and as players were licking their wounds, Hawkins entered the players locker room and let out an loud and yell that had been saved up over six games. The players joined in which created a noise that is hardly describable. NEEDLESS TO say, joy was rampant. Meanwhile, back on the bus, Fred Thompson was without a word. He too is in his first year as a head football coach and still he has yet to find a win for his young and struggling Royal football team. Ironically, Hawkins and Thompson are very good friends but both went their different ways last Friday, with entirely different emotions. THIS WEEK the Lancers will play Highland in the Wednesday UEA game. Highland was ranked third prior to getting beat 20-1-6 by Woods Cross last Friday. Laytons final two contests pit them against the Weber Warriors and the Bonneville Lakers. After Hawkins had nearly lost his voice by yelling so long and loud, he took time to describe the highlights. The first year had man stated, Its been a long time waiting for this. ITS MY first vie (victory) as a football coach and even though I hated having against Fred (Fred Thompson, Roy coach), we needed this win. The kids came to play tonight, make no question about it. Offensively and defensively they were THIS WONT all sink in dll next week, but its great, said Femeau. Roberts said Femeaus long run is what got everyone excited. After that it was just a matter of keeping the spirits high, said Roberts. Bountifuls Joey Covey tries to loft pass over Davis Roger Clawson whose outstretched hand made things a little difficult. The Darts won 42-- 8 to remain unbeaten in 84. MAYBE WERE going a little overboard tonight, said Roberts about the celebration, But I think we deserve it. Roberts carried the ball for 76 yards himself against Roy. Roberts also voiced what his coach said earlier in saying, Our emotions havent been this high all year and I think its important to keep em high as we get ready for Bonneville and Weber. Highland is a tough team but I think weve got a few things going for us right now. The Bone Job Getting By KEITH - a couple of passes, commented, A lot of people on this team, including myself, rose up and played like theyre capable of playing tonight. Both of Vernons pass interceptions later resulted in Layton scores. Vernon said it felt good to shine on defense after dropping another touchdown pass on offense. I'm struggling on offense, he said. Kenny Liqdsey, one of Laytons defensive ends, was key part in Laytons defensive picture. LindI believe the entire sey stated, team went out tonight and knew we were going to win. In the past it was just a certain group of guys who wanted to win. that region. It was the sixth consecutive outing that the Darts have amassed at least 300 yards rushing. ITS A couple of examples that makes the word consistency proud. But how do the Darts do it, week in and week out? AFTER BOUNTIFUL took in on the chin, 42-- last Friday night, theyd probably be the first ones to want to know the reason why. An investigation into the matter has already proven the Darts inno- -, cent of teaching the double wing in the classroom. A search through the Davis High library proved fruitless when nothing written on the famed offense could be found. SECRET agents tried to convict Jimmy Dickson of getting kids out of class and drilling them in procedures but no such luck for the rest of Region Four because Dickson was never caught leaving his math class and Mike Gardner, like Dickson, was innocent on all counts too. Stake out cars around the Dart practice field thought theyd get the answer in proving that the Darts practiced for eight hours a day. But again, Davis was innocent. Perhaps they did stay for a half hour or maybe even an hour longer than any of their opponents practice, but Dickson defended that in saying as he has time and time again that a little hard work wont hurt anyone. on the Roy quarterback and also forced a fumble which Layton recline. overed on the Roy three-yar- d Brian Bailey said, It was just time to win a homecoming game and get our first win of the year and lucky for us it all happened in the same night. I couldnt have thrown like I did and Femeau couldt have run like he did without a super effort frome . NO, BOUNTIFUL, we cant gure it out on this end either. fi- : doing more work than I am and Im proud of them, said Card who is a junior and who scored on runs of 48 and 34 yards against the Braves. Dickson has ideas on things too. The head coach commented, "Physically, the people up front as well as everyone else, got in Bountifuls lips. Without a few fumbles early we could have been up 28-- 0 at MIKE ROBINSON, the teams fullback, who scored Davis fourth half. caught himself giving one good reason why the Darts are so superb at running the football down peoples throat. It was last Saturday morning as the club came back for a quick practice to ready themselves for the battle with Bonneville this week. Robinson wandered up to Gardner, one of Dicksons assistant coaches and stated, Anyone, I meart anyone, could have scored onthe play I scored on. Those guys (the Darts offensive linemen) opened upa hole you could have drove a pick-u- p truck through. adversity which again the kids touchdown last Friday night, 8 LINDSEY put plenty ofpressure those guys. Tim Frazier, Brent Higgs, Jim Kortwright, Todd Myia, Rex Brimhall and Ron Barker have to feel good about their effort blocking on the offensive line. It was by far their best and perhaps even deserving of the game ball. For the sixth conecutive week of the 84 season, Davis did it again as they rolled up 395 yards rushing in 50 carries en route to their third Region Four victory and undisputed possession of first place in KAYSVILLE Davis High is consistent in piling up 300 or 400 yards rushing per game as the Los Angeles Raiders are in having winning seasons. BART Vernon, who intercepted THE LINE was great. Duncan Journal Sports non-leag- ue GARDNERS quick reply was, I hope that tells ya something Mike. And Robinson replied back even quicker, I know, coach, Ive already thanked them and told em how good a job theyre doing. Chris Card also knows the job the big people up front are doing. For the second straight week Card rushed for oyer 100 yards, piling up 230 against Woods Cross two weeks ago and 139 on 13 carries against Bountiful last Friday. THE LINE has been getting better and better each week. There are some guys up there that are BUT AGAIN we had some handled in a very positive way. at half As it was Davis led but came out roaring in the second half and scored four more touchdowns. 14-- 0 THE DARTS knew they had to put the pressure on Bountifuls young and talented quarterback, Joey Covey. The Davis team would get in and out of certain defenses which gave fits to Covey all night. People like Vaughn Todd Norton and Keith Hunsaker were bullish on the sophomore quarterback. For the evening he completed 14 of 27 passes but Davis kept him from throwing no TD strikes and only 134 yards through four quarters. Cas-dorp- h, We bent at times, but we didnt break, said Dickson, They may have racked up 240 total yards, but outside the long TD run (Covey broke loose for a run), we zone end the out of them kept which is what counts. 66-ya- rd OUR RUNNING game is con- tingent on people blocking for blocking. Everyone is blocking well, even our backs who must block well, continued Dickson. One of the outstanding performances in the Bountiful game came from senior Greg Norton who intercepted Covey twice and recovered a fumble. He had a great night, said Dickson. ABOUT DAVIS lack of experience at the first of the year and apparent abundance of it now, Card noted, Weve gained experience with each week that has passed. In our practice sessions weve gained a ton of experience because we come out to play during the week just like we do Friday night. ARE THE Darts going game by game or could they now be looking forward to another region championship? Card gave his opinion by saying, Theres nost as much talk about winning the region title as most people would think. Its pretty much a game by game thing with us where some schools who are 0 might be thinking about nothing else but winning the region. 3-- OUR MINDS are thinking Bonneville right now and then well start thinking about Highland and Viewmont when those weeks roll around. And Alta, whos Alta? I dont even know what their record is. Are they going to make it to the state playoffs? If they do make it, Im confident well get em. DICKSON said, You dont overlook anyone. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day. The best thing about these kids is that they are keeping things in perspective. Anything less is definitely less in their book. Defense, most of the time, takes a back seat. high-flyin- g, pass-happ- : BUT IN Clearfield these days, the Falcon football team is on an high. And its not because all-ti- they have the most terrific offense along the Wasatch Front, either. These guys in green and white lead the Region One football pack with a 0 record because of some stellar play on defense. 3-- LAST FRIDAY night under the lights here, the '84 group of players put on four quartern of impressive and aggressive defensive play that d helped them to a 10-- 7 win over the Bonneville Likers who were also undefeated heading into that contest. Not many folks around would have bet much money that the Falcons would be all alone in first long-awaite- place after three weeks of Region One play. There were just too many things to work against a bet like that. ONE OF those was the points the defense gave up in three games and only an overtime win to show for it. Another was the kids themselves. As sophomores and juniors, the seniors now have been slowly learning this game of football and hadnt had much success. But wow, oh how theyve fooled some folks. 100-pl- pre-seas- win-wis- e, BRENT Hancock and his assis tants went back to the videos and chalkboard and began working with what they had to put something together after poor preseason. Whatever they meshed together on defense deserves one of those gold medals they handed out in Los Angeles last summer. Even though there are two region games left (Box Elder and Roy), the Falcons have given up only 2 1 points in regulation in three games. THEY'VE already shutout the a team which exLancers ploded for 35 points last week against Roy. They held a good We (7-0- f ), ber offense to only 14 regulation points only to see the Warriors explode themselves last week for 30 against Box Elder. Bonneville simply had fits with Clearfield all night and could manage only a single score. It was a match-u- p of two great defenses, said Hancock after the game, Our kids were a little more aggressive and maybe thats why we got the win. IT WAS a victory for Hancock and Clearfield High who hadn't beaten the Lakers in football since Hancock first came to Clearfield in 1977. Was it sweet? long-await- Hancock said it was by starting, You better believe its sweet. But the guys I feel the best for are the kids who are finally getting a taste of what winning is all about. They are deserving of everything theyre getting right now. The scoring was a highlight but not as much as the tens and tens of spectacular defensive plays. THE GAME was deadlocked at after the first half. But to start the second half, Greg Boseman rip- - 0-- 0 Continued on next page |
