Show -- totrrnrrn Lancers, Falcons. Renew Their Bitter Rivalary On Friday By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports In football seasons past. Region One has reached a standard of excellence among the rest of the state that would be fairly hard to refute. the Layton Lancers won a talented group of kids that could have beat some college teams. Into the 80s there was resurgence in the Bonneville High program brought on by Tomm Budge that later was capped with a state championship. Even the Royals from Roy High got into the act as Ernie Jacklin culminated several years of coaching expertise in helping that school earn its first ever state football championship in any sport. But after 18 games, three apiece for each of Region Ones six teams, theres talk that this may be a year where the glad mor and prestige of being a football team in Region One is nothing but IN 1977 it all with pre-seas- top-rate- hog-was- h. a ... from what I see now, anyone Olympus, but its amazing what can happen to a team from Region One once theyve gone through five region games and head into the state playoffs as the top team from this region. After making it through the dogfight, Id never bet my money against em. And this Friday marks the start of another Region One debut in football as Roy meets Box Elder, Clearfield and Layton tangle in Layton and Weber tests Bonne4-- A ville. TEAMS have emerged through a tough, dogmatic region schedule here to rise to the top. I dont think 84 will be any different. Another inside reason that Region One teams arent going to lay dead and give up is the fact that tradition and excellent coachesjust wont allow it to happen. Even though Layton, with Brad Hawkins at the helm and Roy with Fred SO-S- O Thompson leading the way are both winless, nobody can tell me those teams are bad football squads. Who knows whether theyll be the ones to find themselves during the region schedule. THERE IS a lot of optimism in the Weber High football camp these days. Coach Rod Bockwoldt has led his Warriors to their best record in many years and theyre heading into Region One with as much confidence as anyone. Coach Bockwoldt commented about it, You just cant pass judgment on teams based upon their records and Ill be the first to not do it. Any given team can beat any other team on any given night. sult the team has scored 73 points in three games while racking up over 1100 total yards in offense. Their only defeat came from Davis, but Weber played the Darts tougher than any of their three preseason foes did. On defense Weber has given up 56 points and 34 of those came in the Davis game. Lets face it, said Bockwoldt, The Darts are tough. Theyre No. in the state in 1 my book. QUARTERBACK Jeff Pobanz has played well, throwing for 471 yards in three games. The tailback Terry Farnsworth has averaged more than 100 yards rushing in We- - ... dont fool yourself, region one teams havent been playing that well so it might behoove us to rise up and win. Brad Hawkins pre-seas- could win this league! Brent Hancock pre-seas- IF YOU were to glance at just the records alone, you could perhaps pass that kind of judgment. Only Weber and Bonneville have winning marks, both of those schools coming out 1 in Meanwhile, Clearfield and Box Elder have only one win and neither Layton or Roy have yet to win. But folks, I cant believe in such a thing! And theres a few reasons pre-seas- 2-- pre-seaso- n. WEVE APPROACHED each game one at a time and thats been one reason for our success. Nobody can tell me this region wont be represented well in the end. Weve always been competitive up here. Even though weve marks, got some dismal it doesnt mean a thing. The real season starts this week, the season that really counts. pre-seas- why. GRANTED, THERE may not be la powerhouse in Region One, a school that fields the size, speed and strength of an Alta, Granger or WEBER STARTED the season with 21 first-yea- r ballplayers who were either juniors or seniors. Bockwoldt has blended that with some good experience and as a re bers first three games and Bockwoldt calls him a major college prospect. Weber has some good skill at the receiver spots which should make the Weber offense a little tougher too. All of this should help make team turn it around and lasts compete with the best in this re0-- 5 locker room, said Brent Hancock, When we take the field against Layton on Friday night, that game will be the only thing that counts for these kids. THE DAVIS defeat came a week 0 after Clearfields dramatic overtime victory over Woods Cross, a win which proved Clearfield can play some decent football. Were still just a few positions and personnel from being a good football team, said Hancock. 21-2- gion. WERE HAPPY with our two wins. No matter what anyone says, a win is a win and we think theyre very valuable, said Bockwoldt. Clearfield had a miserable time last Friday night in their 84 home opener against Davis, losing 40-- to the Darts. 7 BUT YOU can bet the Falcons and the Lancers, who play this Friday night in the 84 Region One opener for both teams, will be forgetting anything that has hap- pened in the past. The Davis game was forgotten two minutes after we got in the CLEARFIELD is getting some good things from Brad Sherwood at quarterback and the running game is sparkling at times when Greg Boseman, Craig Carter or Dean Porter find their openings. From what I see right now, anyone could win this league, said Hancock, Its fairly balanced. give them a slight advantage in some ways. Theyve got no place to go but up so you know theyll come out with some fire, sait Ott. IF WE CAN come out with the same intensity we had against Woods Cross, weve got the capability to destroy them. The unity and intensity during that game is what its all about and weve got to recapture that same kind of enthusiasm again, continued Ott. Clearfields other big people include Jeff Folk, Ken Ashby, Dennis Langford and Kenny Stoker. LAYTON, JUST like Clearfield, suffered through a tough defeat last Friday against Woods Cross. Brad Hawkins defined it as one of the most terrible football outings Ive sat through. It was just a lack of hustle, lack of desire, lack of effort and no desire to win. Sometimes the kids were just going through the motions. IF CLEARFIELD does rise up and beat some people in the '84 WE PLAYED well against region schedule, itll be because of a line that comes to play football. Bountiful but havent got any betSenior Pat Ott is one of those ter since that time. that Coach Hancock is hoping will But as a coaching staff were lead the charge on the line. Ott not giving up, none of us, neither knows that Layton will be very on the kids or with the program as a hungry for a win and that might whole. But the ball is in the kids hands and theyve got to decide whether or not they want to start blocking and tackling and doing the things they know theyve got to do, said Hawkins. NOW IS when it counts, this Friday against Clearfield. We don t have to fool ourselves that the teams in this region haven't been playing very well so it might behoove us to get it together and go out and get a win. "Clearfield is much bigger than us and well respect their size. Well also have to contend with their good running backs, kids like Craig Carter and Greg Boseman. JOINING the ranks of discontent with their present status arc the Roy High Royals who under Fred Thompson have not yet woo in 1984. We haven't given up by any said Thompson as his troops prepared for Box Elder. Weve had some key injuries and what I believe has been a tough schedule to prevent us from getting where we want to be." means, ROY RETURNED only one star- ter from last years state playoff team and he only played defense. Layton Still Searching For Win LAYTON - One Woods Cross coach, who really said how he felt after his teams 27-- 6 victory over -- Layton last Friday, stated, Layton is a good football team. I HONESTLY believe that once they get the linemen believing in themselves and doing the things that Brad Hawkins wants them to do theyll end up beating some team. That isnt much consolation for Hawkins and his Lancer football team who suffered through their worst defeat of the year and third straight setback of the still young football season. THE LANCERS only score 84 u came from tailback Robert late in the game as time was running out. This week the Lancers w ill meet from Cleaifield in their the opening game of the Region One schedule. The game will be played in Layton's stadium this Friday evening. F'er-nea- arch-riva- ls Mew Faces In Football, , , i |
