At first glance, it’s hard to see why. Conference schools derivedlittle financially from the 10-game package Brigham Young, Wyoming and Texas-El Paso | pad es jumble dates to a sports network. And most of ie contests will be seen on ESPN2, which reaches only 15 million homes, virtually none in Utah. But commissioner Karl Benson insists the dealwill pay dividends. “Our primary objective is to generate as muchregional and national exposure as we can as we try to sell the WAC,” hesays. “And what better vehicle than television? It’s not just the games on ESPN2: the Sports Center highlights, it's cut-ins to our games on ESPN. Our goal is to make the WAC a household name, and this is the perfect way to do that.” The WAC and ESPN signed a five-year football contract last June, and announced a four-year basketball agreement in May. This latest, one-year package came about when the network asked the conference to shuffle some games so it could televise the Nebraska-Oklahoma State game on Aug. 31. “It was an unusualsituation,” says Utah athletic director Chris Hill, a memberof the WAC’stelevision committee. ‘They needed that Nebraska-Oklahoma State date freed up, andthat affected a whole lot of other people.” Wyoming moved three games to accommodate ESPN; UTEP and BYU one apiece. The Cougars and Cowboyswill play Oct. 21 in Provo instead of Sept. 23. The three schools do get additional ESPN exposure from the switches. BYU's Sept. 2 openerat Air Forcewill be nationally televised, as will Wyoming's Sept. 9 game against AFA and UTEP’'s Nov. 25 date with the Cowboys. But given the meager payouts and schedule scrambling, wasit worth it? “We've got the newfootball deal and an exclusive basketball package with them,’ Benson notes. “ESPN is our television partner. They asked us for help, and we wanted to cooperate with them. ESPN and ESPN2 continue to grow. We want to grow with them.” o ADD TELEVISION One nameconspicuously absent from either of ESPN's 1995 football schedules is Utah, which finishedlast season 10-2 and ranked 10th in the Associated Press poll But that could change. Sources around the league confirm that a formal directive has beenissued to every club, stating a lockout will go into effect the day after Houston and Orlando determine the championship. The directive states that while the league will conduct the draft June 28, all other business — summer training camps, trades, contract extensions and free-agent sign- ings — will halt. NBA commissioner David Stern, at The Summit for Game 3 of The Finals, did not deny that the league is headedforits first work stoppage. A lockout could come as early as Thursday because the Rockets have takena 30 lead in The Finals. “Our teams have been fully briefed on the optionsavailable to the Labor Relations Committee if no agreement is reached by the end of The Finals,” Stern said “Westill hope that such an agreementis obtainable and won't be commenting on the other options at this time.” Thetwosides brokeoff negotiations last month andhaveno formal meetings planned. Simon Gourdine, Players Association executive director, could not be reached for comment. But sources confirm he has beeninformed of the league’s stance. Players Association president Buck Williams of Portland also was unavailable for comment. The CBA between the league andits players expired at the end of last season. There were rumblings of a lockout in October, but the two sides averted a work stoppage by reaching a no-strike, nolockout agreement. This agreement assured the 1994-95 season would be played and placed a moratoriumon signingor restructuring player contracts. That moratorium expires the day after The Finals. Privately, officials around the league said there was concern that some clubs would rush to sign players to big contracts in an effort to bypass the new system. There are reports that Wash- Falta Video Systems June Special Oritachi ington has an eight-year, $65 million contract waiting for freeagent Chris Webber, andSeattle is prepared to give a five-year, $30 million extension to guard Gary Payton. Sources say the Charlotte Hornets are thought to be on the verge ofsigning center Alonzo Mourning to a multi-year extension that would average $10 million, “We can’t go back to the old system until there is something in place that works,” one official said. “We've got to take certain steps. “The bottom lineis that no basketball will be played until an agreementis reached,”’ At the start of these playoffs, Stern and others remained publicly optimistic about negotiations. But privately, league officials were worried. They say the players would not agree to a hard salary cap — something the owners want in place — and were asking for a larger shareofthe revenue than the owners. Oneofficial indicated the players’ latest proposal would increase the salary cap fromits current $15.9 million to the neighborhood of $22 million for next season.
