Show _The Salt Lake Tribune TIME, MONEY & COMPUTERS Monday, June 12, 1995 B3 Some Unwanted Trees Crop Upin Spring There is a striking difference between a living room and a back yard. And I don’t mean merely room. Sometimes, as during the summer, however, you find phlox and snapdragons and feathery ferns popping up all overthe place, rav- that you don't have to mow the carpet or vacuum the grass Peoplepurchase furniture for a living room and frequently rearrange it. But sometimes a back yard producesits own new furniture without your permission And it is constantly rearranging to be. But things like that happen ina yard. And youhave to pay attention. Once you get a vard established and the bark and leaves and needles on the ground decayand cre- ate a nurturing bedto the liking of seedlings, you must be careful which weeds you pull. Some of them maynot be weeds. Dogwoods, for instance. Every year, our trees have kids — cou- ple of little dogwoodsleaping out of fertile soil. We havelet several go. The first, from about eight years ago, is taller than me and blossoms every spring. We give mostof the rest away. Andit is a pleasure to spread little dogwoods among your friends, to have woody grandkids, so to speak, living with people youlike But sometimes this volunteer yard furnitureis more tricky than that. Most people have a cheap streak that makesit hard to find a tree growing happily in their yard and not accept the gift. But it isn’t just the squirrels. If a squirrel doesn't plant an acorn, it will plant itself. I find acorns in the spring, resting on thesoil, with a long, obscenepointy thing reaching outthe top, kinking over and stabbing toward the ground where, upon penetration, it will begin growing feet — metaphorically, one of the strangest devices knownto Nature. Since it would take less than a dozen mature oaks to fill our yard, and we already have four growing there, the 100 free trees are, to us, something other than trees. Trees in that circumstance are called weeds, So are the dozen or so walnut trees the squirrels plant each year. So are the maplesthat the wind harvests from a neighbor’s yard and plantsin oursoil. So are those deep-rootedlittle SOBs the mulberry bushes (plant vermin) that come up here and there. But you haveto pay attention.
