Nemelka said his wife, Ingrid, has been ill since the family movedinto their Mapleton home shortly after the nitric-acid spill. The nature of herillness never has been pinpointed. Nemelka told the crowd that whether or not his wife's illness is related to the nitrate levels in his well water, “we had better treat this as a problem — not that everything is all right.” Twelve south Mapleton wells of 21.5 parts permillion. Petersen said she knows of three cases of lymphoma, onecase of leukemia and two cases ofbirth defects in her immediateneighborhood. “Thereis a feeling of disquiet,” she said. “If there's something Trojan could tell us, they would like to knowit.” Trojan representatives did not attend the Wednesday meeting on the advice of their legal counsel Trojan mailed an “Open Letter to the Citizens of Spanish Fork and Mapleton” in advanceof the meeting.
