I would challenge all science to defy that if any branch of it is yet so primitive. The body we know. The spirit is that source of individuality, of intellect, of personality, that flickering that comes with life, and is life, and goes out with life. And it is not controlled by the body. It is simply in residence behind the eyes. So eyes are the only windows that open to the human spirit. In them nne sees what kindess or cruelty, what love or hate the spirit can carry. There, too, one can search for a spark of divinity offends, (or, if divinity humanity) that is in each spirit. By the cruelties and thoughts and lusts of life, some sparks are snuffed out before they grow, leaving a human spirit without divinity. That unguided victim may be forever after the slave of any decadence. But some other sparks ignite, and those human spirits radiate goodness towards all life. Albert Schweitzer was one whose spark of divinity took flame. Throughout his works especially as doctor and musician his reception to the spirit of man is evident Because he had so profound a respect for life, he developed a theory of living that he called Reverence for life. In this theory, no man kills any living creature except in certain and great need. Even an insect is not killed wantonly. Dr. Schweitzer undoubtedly sensed the separation of spirit and body in all creatures. He must have believed that a spirit should be free to reach as far as it can, and should not be stopped, as a hunter does to it. And too, a human spirit that stops another spirit begins to snuff out its own spark of divinity. The light in its eyes begins to fade. Divinity shows in eyes. Look deep into a pair of eyes any gentle pair, either animal or humaa You cannot look far enough to see the end; kind eyes have an infinity. The flicker of joy or joy or the ash of sorrow that is there is the spirit, the true being. That spirit is the developing marvel of creation, much more than the body is. Abstinence from killing is for the spirit for two spirits not for the body. No person can be in harmony with his own spirit and stop another spirit. Have Reverence for life. Let the space behind your eyes show kindness. By refrain and adoration, let yours be a spirit that ignites its spark of divinity.
