I try to fight off getting old; but facts just keep reminding; whatever it is that makes me tick now needs a good rewinding. (Editorial) VOTE . . . The Industrial Park facilities are expected to be in operation by next July and will be employing nearly 100 people during its first year of operation, developer Merwyn Riddle told Mt. Pleasant citizens at a public meeting Tuesday night in the high school auditorium. d The meeting was called by Mayor Glen Hardy to explain the Industrial Park complex and bonding program to the citizens of Mt. Pleasant. November 4 is on the threshold of its 200th anniversary and whether or not this great country is able to mark another 200 years will depend on how much todays American is willing to do and to give for his country. Little by little Americas freedoms are being eroded because we the people are failing to get involved, Americans are becoming sleepers and are showing a great deal of lethargy in their attitudes towards national, state and city governments. While the citizens of North Sanpete may be unable to generate a great deal of influence over national policies (although we should put forth every effort) there is a lot that can be done in our area to improve our own little corner of the greatest country on earth. Communities in this area will be facing many challenging issues in the future. Many things are changing and these problems cannot be swept quietly under the rug. We will need wise and capable leadership to meet these issues head on. Our communities need men and women who will be able to deal with the problems of growth, zoning, housing and utility systems. Our communities must be planned before they become a problem. The challenge will be to meet these problems and still retain the country atmosphere that we all love. It is certainly distressing to learn that in sorhe of our towns, candidates for city offices could care less about filling the positions they are supposedly seeking. Their lack of enthusiasm could also show up in their decision making policies leaving the people in their communities a little short on leadership. With so many vital issues facing the people in the North Sanpete area it is important that the communities elect and support sound leaders. How enthused are your candidates? Have they made an effort to keep you informed on the issues facing your community? Have they expressed their views on these issues? Have you as a citizen taken enough interest in your own town and the people you will elect to make your decisions to find out what all of your candidates believe? The framework 'of our great country was designed to begin with you. The strength of our communities, large or small, is the strength of America , America. The future is in your hands. Do your part be an informed voter, November 4. Kent Evans Former Fairview man receives banking diploma " Representing the City Council were Jim Thronton, Allan Shelley and George Johansen: Mt. Pleasant City Council candidates were also present as was Jack McAllister County Attorney. Mr. Riddle said some of the preliminary work such as drawing up plans by the architect were being done now and possibly some of the grading could get underway weather permitting this fall, He said some of the maintenence workers would probably be hired after the first of the year with full construction on the In- dustrial park complex getting underway when spring breaks. Mr. Riddle told citizens that the industrial park would create a $100,000 monthly payroll and would more than triple the tax base in Mt. Pleasant when in full operation. Explaining the nature of the proposed businesses that are set up to locate in the industrial park complex, Mr. Riddle urged the audience to ask questions concerning the project. He said developments like the proposed industrial park are new here but are common in other parts of the country. Mr. Riddle stated that the businesses locating in the complex will be leasing the property, buildings and equipment until they are e paid for on a arrangement. Mr. Riddle explained how Mt. Pleasant was chosen for the site after the brokers rejected Manti due to the flood threat. He said it was the investors who made the lease-purchas- Five businesses will be set up the Park site and will require about 20 acres, Mr. Riddle told the citizens. In answer to a question, Mr. Riddle said all the businesses are new. He pointed out that production requirements for large national companies were too high for an area of this size and also stated that he felt it was more reaonsable not to depend on one large company due to economic shifts. Mr. Riddle named the men who will be managing the companies and gave a run down on their qualifications. He also stated he would be moving here as would the other management personnel. He anticipated about twenty families moving here after the first of the year and all would other employment probably be hired from the local area. Mr. McMurtry explained the industrial revenue bonds which he said are tax free bonds created under the Industrial Revenue Act to encourage business development. He said a county is limited to bonding for five million on a three-yea- r basis according to the act. He said all of the Wasatch Front counties had bonded to their limits and said other Utah counties were also encouraging development with this same system. Mr. McMurtry stated, It doesnt bother Mt. Pleasant Citys credit or bonding power. and that the bonding had been cleared through the State Attorney General, the FDIC and the IRS. He stated that the Industrial Revenue act was created to get people to invest in small communities in small states. Interest on the bonds is tax free, he reported. Mr. McMurtry said he was unable to reveal the names of the people buying the bonds for business reasons, but said they were American investors. Mr. Riddle, said he had encountered some skeptism among the people stating he found they felt it sounds like a fairy story and we dont belive fairy stores. Mr. Riddle said he realized there had been past experiences that were un- fortunate. Mr. Riddle said, the difference here is, we are bringing the money in and are not asking for investments..
