August 10. 1996 SA Utahns: Kemprejuvinates Dole CI They said he should bring renewed life to stagnant GOP campaign Standard-Examiner staff Putting well-known conservative Jack Kemp on the No. 2 spot on the GOP presidential ticket with Bob Doleis being embraced by most Northern Utah Republicans. “| think he brings a lot to the ticket,” said Utah Republican Party Executive Director Spencer Stokes. “He’s the kind of viceptesidential candidate that I think we need.” Stokes, the former Weber County Commission chairman, spoke from San Diego where he is helping prepare next week’s Republican National Convention. Dole is tentatively scheduled to announce today who his running mate will be in this fall’s election. He dismissed concerns that Kemp, a former New York congressman, will further alienate Republican moderates who already lost ground in the party’s platform battle over abortion. Kemp staunchly opposes abortion. “Dole brings the moderate side of the party along and Kemp brings the conservatives along,” Stokes said. “He's an excellent choice. It's someone who will bring life and vigor to the campaign and it’s someone the Democrats ought to be worried about.” Soon-to-be Republican County Commissioner Glen Burton said it is too early to say, whether Kemp will make it possible for Dole to beat Clinton, “butit will help Dole’s campaign. He has a lot of respect across the country.” Rep. Gerry Adair, R-Roy,said Kemp will help the Dole campaign because of his strong political presence, but Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt would have been a more suitable choice for the ticket. In Davis County, Republicans hold every county andstate elected office. To Dole supporters like Clay Stucki, Kempis a perfect choice. “In a nutshell, Kempis a conservative who can reach out to moderates and people outside the party,” said Stucki, legal advisor for ‘Hail Mary’ pass? Bill Udink of North Ogden said Kemp is probably “as good @ choice as any.” . “Kemp is an old football player, so he can probably throw the bull as good as he threw the ball,” Udink said. “I think Clinton’s going to win anyway.” Norman Hull of Hooper said he does not know much about Kemp, but he is an “all right” choice. Gloria Berry of North Ogden said she does not think Kemp is a good choice as a running mate. “T think Dole needs to run with somebody whohas a broader appeal,” Berry said. Dole joked about keeping his choice a surprise and sneaking his pick into his tiny hometown: “Hopefully we'll be able to bring whoeverit is in through the back door and nobodywill notice — but I doubtit.” Dole aides prepared for Saturday’s rally on the courthouse steps in Russell - where Dole began his political career as county attorney - and then a triumphant arrival Sunday in this GOP convention city where Dole-Kemp T-shirts were already on sale and early arrivals were abuzz with talk of whether Kemp could help Dole overcome President Clinton’s big lead. “Jack Kemp is the ideal choice,” said another finalist in the search, Michigan Gov. John Engler. “Bob Dole’s inspired choice shows that he has the leadership and decision-making for the Davis County Republican Party and a former Kemppresidential campaign worker. Stucki said Kemp’s style should bring more minorities to the party, makingit a race.
