DRAGONHEART(PG-13) *** Violence Just as the ads for this standard fantasy-adven- ture proclaim, “YOU WILL BELIEVE.” For example, YOU WILLBELIEVEthat staunchly American actors like Dennis Quaid (cast as a “knight of the old code”) never look sillier than when they're plopped in medieval England and surrounded by real British actors. On the other hand, YOU WILL BELIEVE the FX guys at Industrial Light & Magic may have outdone themselves with the computer-rendered talking dragon (eloquently voiced by Sean ery) who helps Quaid battle an evil king. Capitol, Movies 10, Riverdale 4 (with “Fled”), North Star Drive-Ins (with “Phenomenon”™) INDEPENDENCEDAY(PG-13) **** Language, violence, mature themes. Make no mistake; the more brain cells you leave at the door, the better. There’s not much that happens in killer-aliens-invade-Earth epic that could bear the weight ofa single rational or analytical thought. But director/co-writer Roland Emmerich (“Stargate”) sweeps you up so quickly in his tidal wave ofstraight-faced, turbo-powered, doomsday-movie silliness that you'll be hard put to formule ) yond, “Wowee!” With Will S Bill Pu and Jeff Goldblum. JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH (PG) ERASER (R) ** Graphic violence andlanguage. A brainless, exhausting reassembly of bits and pieces from all of the other Schwarzenegger movies that are exactly like this one, only better. The credits say “written by Tony Puryear and Walon Green,” but a more correct adjective would have been “exhumed.” The best thing to say about the film is that it makes absolutely no difference whether you walk in at the Deginning or at any other point. The whole thing is a big, noisy, one-dimensional, plotholendden, laughably overdone, numbingly violent loop. Movies 10, and the Motor-Vu and North Star Drive-Ins (with “Independence Day”) Jonathan Hession photo Disney Company's 34th animated feature is a masterful take on Victor Hugo's classic tale of Quasimodo, the lonely bellringer who longs for the beautiful Gypsy girl, Esmeralda. The darkness of the substantially cleaned-up story is gracefully balanced by Disney's trademarked brands of sentimentality, pathos, triumph and comedy. Is it balanced enough for very young children? Only you know the answer tothat one. And if you don't, you might want to prescreen “Hunchback” before loading the kidsin the family van. The plot is as loony as any you'd find in a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie: When nutty commando Ed Harris captures Alcatraz and holds San Francisco hostage with chemical Wright, Morgan Freeman and Stockard Channing star in Daniel DeFoe’s tale of loe, lust and survival in 18th-century London.
