Bush, dressed in a jacket, khaki pants and a blue shirt, was waiting at the bottom ofthe steps when his onetime Republican rival stepped off his campaign plane. The former president shook hands with Dole, and said hello to reporters he knew from his White House years, before the two drove to Bush's beloved oceanfront home. They were meeting privately, away from reporters, but planned a later joint appearance. Dole has said he hoped Bush would campaign actively for him in thefall. “He’s been very helpful. I talk to him now and then,” Dole said earlier this week. Dole, whose sometimes lackluster campaign has drawn criticism even from Republicans, says things are coming around. In an interview in today’s Washington Post, he acknowledged “it has taken a while” to accustom himself to the discipline of the presidential race. But, he said, “I'm talking about ideas now.” Bush and his wife, Barbara, live in Houston most of the year but still summer in Kennebunk- port. Their son, Texas Gov. hind (Democrat) Michael Dukakis. That's the good news,” Bush told a GOP fund-raising dinner in Kentucky. “The bad news is I was about 14 points ahead of Clinton at the same time. And here I am unem- ployed and retired and, I might add, very, very happy.” The two planned later public remarks on the sixth anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act, which Dole sponsored and Bush signed. Then - a boat ride, perhaps? Nelson Warfield, Dole’s spokesman, said recreational activities were not on the schedule. But he wouldn't rule them out, either. Dole, whose right arm is paralyzed from a World War II wound, gets most of his exercise on a treadmill. But Bush has a history of coaxing visitors into joining him in one form or recreation or another. Bush has taken a host of prominent Americans and world leaders out on his sleek Cigarette powerboat, from Jordan’s King Hussein to evangelist Billy Graham. But notall have been enthusiastic. Then-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, not a lover of the sea, refused. Then-French President Francois Mitterrand balked at Bush's invitation to go boating, insisting they take a slow walk in the woods instead. And then-Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney wound up with a fish hook in his ear on his boat outing with Bush. FURNITURE BY HUDSON Sleek, contemporary style with full reclining comfort. Tobacco smokeleads to more crib deaths (1) Researchers also find infants who sleep on their sides risk death Los Angeles Times Exposure to tobacco smokeis a muchbiggerrisk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than was previously suspected, and keeping newborns away from tobacco smoke could reduce the death rate from SIDS by nearly two-thirds, British researchers report Friday. In the largest studyofits kind, encompassing more than 350,000 births over a two-year period, the team also found that allowing an infant to sleep on its side doubles the risk of death compared to sleeping on its back, a previously unsuspected finding. As many as one-third of parents in England have adopted side-sleeping as a compromise because of the high risk of SIDS previouslylinked to sleeping face down, according to the study. Sleeping on the side reduces the risk of SIDS, but not as much as sleeping on their backs, the researchers said. Reporting in the British Medical Journal, the team said that in addition to being kept away from tobacco smoke completely, if infants were also placed on their backs to sleep and wrapped only in light blankets, the SIDS death rate in England could be reduced to less than one-quarter of what it is today. The reduction would be even higher in the United States because so manyinfants here are still allowed to sleep on their stomachs, said Dr. Peter Fleming of the University of Bristol, who headed the study. With efforts already being made to control infant sleep positions in the United States, smoking is becoming the next concern that needs to be addressed, said neurobiologist Marian Willinger, special assistant for SIDS at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Develop- SAN FRANCISCO ~- Ameri- * ca Online, the nation’s largest online service, reversed a week-old English-only rule in a soccer discussion forum after angry Span- ish-speaking subscribers called it racist and threatened to cancel. Eliminating the deaths linked to sleeping position makes it much easier to measure the importance of other factors, she said. The United States is in the midst of a similar campaign that has resulted in a 30 percent reduction in SIDS deaths over the last two years - from a baseline of about 6,000 deaths per year down to about 4,200.
