Nielson. chapter in the state of Utah to receive national recognition in the safety award program this year. Local chairman for the safety program for 1980-8- 1 was Calvin Johnson who worked closely with his committee, chapter members, and others, in carrying out a comprehensive safety program included such activities as monthly safety films from the Utah Extension Service, sale of fire and smoke detectors, a hazard hunt to identify and correct hazards on the farms and in the homes of members. ,y.5 : Eagles Score High Members of the Millard Eagles FFA Chapter attended the 54th National FFA Convention In Kansas City, Missouri, last week where they received special recognition for the chapter's achievements in the National FFA Safety Award Program. The chapter was one of the 141 Safety Award winners that received special recognition. The program is sponseted as a special project of the National FFA Foundation and sponsered by Farm and Industrial Equipment Institute and Dow Chemical U.S.A. The chapters recognized this year participated in a wide range of safety activities including: Farm and Home Safety Surveys, Farm Equipment Safety Inspecrtions, Farm Shop Safety Programs, promotion and sale of slow moving signs. Safe Corn Harvest Campaigns, programs to illustrate safety procedures in the use of farm chemicals and many other farm and home safety projects. The Millard Eagle FFA Chapter was the only WERE IS SObj? -,-- plus special presentations by the Millard County Sheriffs Office, the Utah Highway Patrol, Utah Safety Council, Fillmore Fire Department, and the Department of Wildlife Resources. The goal of the local safety program is to acquaint the FFA members and the public with situations which might lead to an accident and to give instructions regarding the prevention and handling emeraccidents and gency situations, thereby creating a safer environment in which to live. n heavyweights at the tournament. He dominated all three opponents from the start of each match, eventually pinning all three, which gave him the heavyweight title. Scott White, at 105, defeated three of his four opponents to earn a 3rd in the place medal tournament. In doing so, he turned in a commendable performance. Todd Quarnberg at 119 placed third. He showed a lot of desire and determination when he came back and defeated Tony Archuleta of Gearfield by a pin in the consolation round for 3rd and 4th. Archuleta had defeated him earlier in the tournament. Sam Probert at 126 lbs., placed third. He pinned Mike Cadena of North Summit in the 2nd round of his first match. His second match found him paired up with D. Wilkinson of Duschesne, a returning state champ, and was defeated which dropped him into the consolation bracket. He came back and pinned his next two matches to win third place. Steve Fline at 138, wrestled well and turned in a 4th place finish. The Millard Eagle wrestlers traveled to Coalville Saturday, Dec. 12. to attend the North Summit Ice Breaker Wrestling Tournament. The teams competing were Clearfield 4A, Layton 4A, Intermountain. 2A, Juab 2A, South Summit, 1A, North Summit, 1A, and Duschesne, 1A. Coach Probert said, I am proud of the way our wrestlers competed. They were tenacious and dominating and, in most of their matches, were the agressors. Millard placed four in First Places. Eric Searle, 98 lbs., dominated his weight class by defeating his first two opponents by pins and winning the championship match from D. Edwards of Gearfield by a score of 12 to 4. He was also selected as the Most Outstanding Wrestler in The tournament by the coaches, which is a very prestigious honor for the Millard freshman. Greg Searle won the 112 lb. class by defeating his his first opponent second by a pin in the first round. He won the championship round by defeating D. Wiersma, a defending state champion, by a pin in the first round. Kurds Robins, a very determined and hard nosed wrestler, won the 167 lb. class by defeating his first opponent, Jeff Evans of Gearfield, by a pin in the third round; pinned his opponent from Juab in the second round, and defeated D. In the Millard County project. Delta High and Millard High Schools and economic development agencies will work together to develop training programs for business and industry. The project is sponsored by the American Vocational Association under a contract with the Department of Education. We hope to provide the information and technical assistance that will enable vocational educators to help create jobs in their communities," said Krishan Paul, national project director. Local sponsors recently took part in a professional development week-lon- g workshop, conducted by AVA project staff. The workshop provided assistance in effetive local and state strategies for linkages, identifying resources and key groups within communities and finding funds to conduct activities coming out of the demonstration project. The AVA project staff will provide assistance to demonstration sites in conducting needs assessment, finding resource people, developing training materials and by providing resource materials.
