Dutson by STELLA DAY Alexander Melville was born February 15, 1821, in the town of Pitteewen, Fifeshire, Scotland, the son of John and Ann Webster Melville. Alexander had three brothers and a sister. After leaving school at the age of fifteen he learned the bakers trade, then the blacksmith's and after that the coopers trade, which is the making of barrels and casks. He made barrels from native lumber after arriving in Utah, since every one had to have barrels of water in order to travel such long distances between streams of water. When the companies were called to go back to the states to bring new of Saints companies across the plains, Alexander was called to bake big batches of crackers and biscuits to be used for the trips. Before Alexander became converted to the Latter-day Saints religion he was a sailor on a whaling vessel, and had some thrilling experiences killing whales for commercial uses, but we will reserve those experiences for another article, since they fill a column by themselves. In the late fall of 1843, Alexander was married to Elizabeth Adamson of Boriland, Scotland, and a month later he and his wife joined the Latter-da- y Saints Church. They set sail for America in the good ship Family of Boston" and after a pleasant voyage of six weeks and three days they landed in New Orleans on March 6, 1844, and immediately took a boat for Nauvoo arriving April 4, 1844. Alexander was now 23 yrs. old. The family stayed in Nauvoo until 1846 yhen the mob drove them pul and they started for winter quarters. Brother Alexander writes, Previous to coming to Utah, 1 was in the Nauvoo Legion under General Joseph Smith. I was in Nauvoo at the time Joseph and his brother Hyrum were killed in Carthage jail. 1 was in the fighting at Nauvoo which lasted eight days, where three men were killed and eight men were wounded. We cut down Squire Wells corn to keep the mob from coming to town. This was in order that we could have a good view of the whole country about and keep the mob from having a hiding place. I was at the meeting when Brigham Young was chosen to lead the Saints in Joseph Smith's place. Our oldest child, John, died when he was nine months old in St. Louis. When we crossed the plains our oldest living child, James, was only three weeks old, and his mother and grandmother, Anne Green Carling, carried him in a basket almost all of the way.
