Dutson Publisher & Editor Marge Barton Reporter Photographer Compositor - Display Ads by STELLA DAY Have you noticed how colorful the mountains are getting due to the fall colors which decorate each tree according to the different types which cover our mountains9 Fall is a good time of year to plar ' evergreen trees, such as Rocky Mountain Juniper, Douglas Fir, Austrian Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Scotch Pine, Lodgepole Pine, and Eastern Red Cedar. Many other types of trees may be planted if they are in containers and properly planted and cared for during the winter. However, most trees which lose their leaves in the fall are better planted early in the spring. One thing which pleases me about Fillmore is its many beautiful trees. We have some exceptionally attractive street tree plantings. The Golden Rain trees along First North, the Norway Maple trees along Center, the English Hawthorne trees on South Main all will need special care to see that they get enough water, now that we no longer have open ditches Trees are so useful to all our our homes They protect us from the wind and frost and help keep our homes cool in summer and warm in winter. We can also use fruit trees in place of some of the shade trees They will not only furnish shade, but will also supply us with delicious fruit. There is absolutely no sense in planting a tree unless we intend to give it the best of care, at least or several years, until it gets well established Make suic that it is watered and fed regularly for at least three years after planting Parents should make the planting of trees, shrubs, vegetable gardens and flowers a family project Assign certain projects to each member of the family with certain days set aside for weeding, watering, and cultivating these plantings. Explain why these jobs are necessary and the children will soon get into the habit of doing these jobs and this valuable training will last a lifetime Good gardeners are not born with a knowledge of gardening They are trained by patient parents who have felt the importance of teaching their children the basic lessons of life. Each day we are more aware of the fact that the world is becoming overpopulated, and if we do not make better use of our land, we are not going to have enough feed for building strong bodies for the millions of new people who are born every minute of the day and night. Another reason for planting more trees is to purify the air Air pollution is getting to be a real problem, especially in areas where there are big factories and mills of different kinds, which fill the air with toxic materials Trees take in carbon dioxide and give off Jean Smith Reporter Photographer 1st Birthday Carlos Valerio wll celebrate his lirM tnrtlul.i' October 21. Children should be taught these facts while very young in order that they will see and know the necessity for lawns, shrubs, and trees. They must also be taught that the roots of trees go out as far as its branches and also that they go deep into the soil in order that they can withstand the wind and still stay upright. The more children are taught about the rules of Nature, the more appreciation they will have for her laws and the more they will help do the worthwhile chores of everyday living. One of the most worthwhile things we can do is to oxygen. a tree in our beautiful North Park in honor of plant We just can't estimate the value of street tree someone we love. It will last for many years and plantings throughout the world. We are taking so become a monument to that person, especially if we plant a long lived tree. But be sure there is someone in the family who will see to the care of that tree. Once it is established it will need very little care for years to come.
