Matheson addresses Senior Citizens gathered tor Center dedication Picture by Robert Ewers GOVERNOR The new Pahvant Senior Citizen Center was officially dedicated the evening of July 2. 1979 with a large attendance of members, officials and guests. A tour of the beautiful building with a variation of paneling and modern futures brought admiring comments. Seventy-fiv- e people sat down to a scrumptious dinner prepared by the regular cooks who prepare the weekly Tables were decorated with meal. summer flowers. Seats were arranged around the large room for those who came for the progran. Mrs. Mae Cahoon, Director, welcomed the crowd and expressed her gratitude for the facility which she said had been her long time dream. She announced the rest of the program as follows. Prayer was by Bishop Dallin S. Nielsen. Mayor Robert Edison welcomed the audience in behalf of Fillmore City. Clem Utley and Marie Jensen each sang two solos, accompanied by Cathryn Nielsen. Bless This House", People. Let There Be Peace" and were the "God Bless America", selections. appropriate Commissioner Harold Stewart expressed satisfaction that the building had been completed in a very workmanlike manner. Dr. R.H. Teichert. director of the Aging Organization, remarked that things begin to happen when you have a place. He challenged the Senior Citizens to become active. .Think of new projects and make them successful. Commissioner Leigh Maxfield introduced Governor Scott M. Matheson, complimenting him for the successful manner in which he is managing affairs of the State Government. The Governor is a very able speaker tspicing remarks with humor. He said that in the ten best states determined to be desirable for retirement, Utah has gained the reputation of being the best. The Governor was accompanied by his wife Norma, who too is an interesting speaker. President Preal George offered the Dedicatory prayer, after which Sarena in the Miss Melville, 3rd runner-u- p Millard County Contest, sang, "If I Loved You, from Carousel. Albert Paxton. Assistant Director at the Center, offered the benediction. He was also Building Supervisor. Mario Mace Construction Company was the builder. Refreshments and dancing followed. Four new professionals join SCS The Fillmore field office of the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) has recently broadened its functions to include activities associated with the Range Evaluation Project on the Oak Creek Mountain Range. In conjunction with this project, four SCS employees have moved to Fillmore. The four professionals assigned to work on this project arc Walt Black. Robert Fish, Todd Nielson. and David Cremeens. Walt Black is a range conservationist He transferred to Fillmore from Pang-uitcUtah. Walt graduated from Utah Slate University with a bachelor's degree in range management. Robert Fish, his wife Deanna, and their two children Loriann and Carolyn moved to Fillmore from Spanish Fork. Robert was working there as a soil scientist for the Fairfield-Neph- i Soil Survey. Robert will be the Soil Survey party leader for the SCS on the Evaluation Area. The Fish family is currently building a new home on Canyon Road on the Agronomy Department. Cindy is currently employed as the Fillmore City Treasurer; she has a degree in Business Administration. Office space for these four men has been located in the extreme east end office building at 88 of the ASCS-SCNorth Main in Fillmore. S Tournament Slated At Millard Golf Course Aug. 18 August 18th is the day for the August Scorcher Tournament at the Millard County Golf Course in Delta. It will be an 18 hole one day tourney with a Derby and Lunch (lunch included with entry fee) to follow play. All money returned in prizes, both Gross and Net will be divided equally, depending on number of entries. Money must be in the hands of the in Fillmore. tournament director by August II. Bishop Dallin S. Nielsen, along v. ith his two counselors. LeGrand Warner and Clay Cummings. were released afi.r nan years of faithful service. Bishop Nit.sen has served as Bishop of the 2nd Ward for the past eight years. Called to serve as Bishop is Lyle O. Evans, who was filling the office of a High Councilman in the Fillmore Stake at the time of his call. Bishop Evans also previously served as First Counselor and Second Counselor in the Fillmore 2nd Ward prior to his High Council assignment. Bishop Evans was born and raised in Parowan in southern Utah. He is married to the former Shirley Rowley also of Parowan. has three children, Robvn. Michael, and Rodney, and four grandchildren. Bishop Evans may be better known to Fillmore and county residents as Evans. He joined the Utah Highway Patrol in 1963, and after moving to Fillmore in 1969, was promoted to the rank of Sargeant in 1973. Don A. Peterson will serve as 1st Counselor. Brother Peterson was serving as a President in the Fillmore Stake Seventies Quorum involved in missionary activities at the time of his call. Clay Cummings will continue to serve as second counselor. Don Stuart, general chairman, assisted by Cliff Purcell, were suburb otganizers. Plans for this great celebration were under the direction of some outstanding committees, all of which made the 1979 celebration such a success. Cathryn Nielsen was chairman of the parade committee, along with Tim Carling, Bertis Frampton, and John Cooper. The theme was Conservation". Judges were Gwen Hunter, Lorraine Stewart Teare. and Ron Brunson. They commended all entries and said that points were close. They wish to give special mention to: Music Makers. Fourth Ward Primarys "Pedal Power" and John Coopers Truck Stop, which was given a humor award for their polka dot truck. Forty entries started at 10 and completed on time. Prizes were awarded as follows: Churches: 1st place. Fillmore Second Ward: 2nd place, Fillmore First; 3rd place. Third Ward Primaty and Ward; Organizations and groups: American Legion & Auxiliary, 1st; Fillmore Hospital. 2nd; Paiute Pageant group by Civic Arts. 3rd; Commercial: Flower Peddlers, 1st; Castle & Cooke Foods. 2nd; Bureau of Land Management. 3rd. Lawrence Peterson conducted. Robert Nielson offered the invocation. Doris Rasmussen led the Pledge of Allegiance. Linda Baugh, member of Stella's first Teen Angel group, presented her a corsage with appropriate remarks. Mayor Robert Edison welcomed the group and added his praise for Stella's accomplishments. Gcri Winger, represented the State of Utah in Community Development, told of her long acquaintance with our Stella. Two former Teen Angels unveiled the beautiful stone monument, which includes a drinking fountain. Dr. Blaine Huntsman made the dedicatory remarks, which were published in full in our July 6 issue. In her response. Stella gave credit for much of her accomplishment to the support she had received from numerous individuals who came forward when she asked for help in carrying out the many improvements in Our r Elvira Stewart.
