Show 25,1971 SAFETY and YOU BEWAREofan OLD All facts authenticated by and throughthe courtesy of the National Safety Council A prime cause of accidents is your old friend ‘‘baldy’’. He’s been around a long time and has served you well, but you can’t depend on him. He won’t stop as fast, even on dry pavement, or give you the traction you eed on turns, ora lot of otherthings he did when he was new. You might say ‘‘he’s lost his grip’, but whatever you say, he should be replaced. How often he must be replaced depends on you and yourdriving habits. Did you know that poor driving habits can cuttire {fe in half, . . . or, that your 4,000 pound automobile has less than one square foot of actual contact with the road, and that of courseis thru the tires. You can actually makeyour tires last _ to twice as longif you know thefactsof life, . . . Tire life thatis. TIRE SAFETY CHECK LIST PROPER TIRE CARE... Five simple rules to prevent costly breakdowns and excessive wear due to improperinflation. Follow these rules and your tires will last longer and operate moreefficiently. 9:op A. Make suretires are kept inflated to recommended pressure. Check regularly and inflate only when they arecool. See that all valve capsare fingertight. Neverlet an old valve core try and take the place of a new one. mm ). Check for slow leaks wheneverair pressure shows drop. Haveslow leaksinvestigated and repaired at once. It is normal for tires to build up a few poundsof pressure after being driven. DO NOT REDUCE this pressure, for whenthetire cools it will then be badly underinflated. UNEVEN WEAR... OUT OF BALANCE... Can ruin tires and give your car the '‘shakes’’. Listen and feel for a thump orvibration. This means trouble and calls for a quick trip to a dealer with propertire balancing equipment. TIRE ROTATION... Tires wear unevenly, and without rotation this wear becomes morepronounced and can cause shimmy, vibration, noise or rough and bumpy ride. Rotation wi!l increase tire mileage, as tires are run in different positions to equalize wear. Rotate every 5000 milesfor best results and follow suggested rotation chart. Watch for uneven wear on your tires, itis another sign of trouble. Have tires checked immediately by a qualified mechanic and he will save you moneyby extending tire life.
