Wilkinson, which turned out to be not a debate at all, but rather two candidates sharing a stage to express their own, and often similar, political views. Each is seeking the Utah Republican nomination for United States Senator in this fall’s election. A toss of the coin by Moderator Charles (Chuck) Peterson placed Congressman Lloyd as the first speaker, and gave him a five-minute -rebuttal perfod following Dr. Wilkinson’s speech. The event took place at Provo High School. Issue Reviewed Congressman Lloyd reviewed several issues currently under debate in Washington, including the president’s budget, to point out what he considered the Republican view and the Republican role in preserving our free enterprise system. He decried the budget as ‘‘a device to manipulate the economy and stimulate employment,’ pointing out that the $97.9 million budget figure does not tell the whole story. ‘‘That figure does not give the whole truth: It is actually a $104 billion budget when the small print in the bill is read, for it contains new obligational authority in the fields of mass transit and federal aid to education all the way down to the elementary school level which will require additional expenditure of $6 billilon.’ ’ Mr. Lloyd condemned administration thinking that ‘‘the national debt is nothing to worry about.” explaining what it meansin termsof inflation and taxes to the individual citizen. “Every average family of five in the nation is paying $275 per year in taxes just to pay the interest on the national debt.” Alternatives Presented Congressman Lloyd presented “constructive alternatives” to the legislation proposed by the administration, advocating the Kerr-Mills bill as a substitute for Medicare. i Dr. Wilkinson declared he had entered politics because he had become tired of the hypocrisy in government demonstrated by the Democratic administration in power during 24 of the past 32 years. He traced what he termed “the duplicity in government” shown by Roosevelt in the measures he (Roosevelt) warned against’ while campaigning for office, and the measure he pushed through once he was elected. Dr. Wilkinson charged President Kennedy of duplicity in political actions pointing to his statements while a senator and the 16 government handouts programs he advocated after he becamepresident. Criticizes Johnson Dr. Wilkinson’s strongest criticisms were directed toward President Johnson whom he charged with running for Senator and vice-president at the same time on two platforms which were directly opposed to each other. He attacked Johnson’s budget, his stand on civil rights and the Democratic policy on Social Security ‘No trust fund of Social Security wasset up, so that present funds would last only a year and a half if payments were stopped,” he said. In his final five minutes Congressman Lloyd explained his vote for the civil rights bill as a “conscience vote” to do something about these people who have twice the average rate of poverty, ignorance, filth and ilIness. “This vast waste of human resources is an increased burden aroundthe productive citizen’s neck.’ Following the speeches questions were aksde by a panel consisting of Dr. Nephi Kezerl ian, local physician; Keith Davies, local educator and DeMar Teuscher, Salt Lake City. Most of the state’s Republican candidates were present at the meeting and reception which followed. Pl.
