Show policeman answered. “You crazy?” “Maybe he’s got a wife and kids.” “That’s his worry. I’m paid to keep the city clear of his kind.” ee ee a They began to walk along thestreet. Presently the affable voice said, “Say, officer, let’s give him a break. I'm willing to forget the whole thing.” The man’s effrontery astounded Henry. Before he could shape a reply the HEY continued in silence as far as the precinct house. Its grimy facade was forbidding. Thepoliceman urged Henry up the stoop and began to follow. Then the quiet voice spoke again. “Let him go. I haven't lost a thing.” The man was hanging back, as though he was reluctant to enter the building. It dawned on Henry that the man waspleading. Forall his seeming composure he wasafraid. Suddenly Henry realized he was in a better position to figure out the truth than the cop. The thug dared not reveal his identity. He had to get Henry off and keep himself out of the station. He probably had a police record. “Nothing doing,” Henry answered firmly. “You're coming inside.” Surprised, the policeman turned toward Henry. In that moment the other swung around, darted between the parked cars, and ran to the corner. Thrusting the policeman aside, Henry leaped downthesteps. “I’ll get him,” he yelled and sped in pursuit. He heard the shrill of a whistle behind him and raced, jubilant and determined. There was no gun to fear. He had the measure of his man. Around the corner and across the avenue. An approaching bus gave the man a momentary advantage, hiding him from view. Then Henry caught sight of him ducking behind a parked station wagon and resumed the chase. He was awareof the powerful pistoning of his limbs, of the need to force that last extra effort. It was like the old days with Mildred jumping up and down, eyes sparkling as she cheered him on to victory. The police arrived to find a triumphant Henry sitting astride the stranger’s back. He looked at them with a broad grin. “Who's paid to keep the city clear of my kind?” he asked sarcastically. “Looks like I made a mistake.” “You sure did,” Henry panted. “But Ill forgive you.” He bounced up and down on the recumbent figure. “This guy’s given methe best birthday present I’ve had in years.” He stood up. 1.
