Only George Washington had proclaimed a national observancesince the first Thanksgiving in 1621. For 17 years Mrs. Hale—a widowwith five children —cajoled, badgered, and implored the country’s leaders to establish a national holiday. One by one individual states joined the lady editor in reviving the Pilgrims’ humble custom, but the Federal governmentignored her pleas until 1863. Then Abraham Lincoln, upon renewed insistence by Mrs. Hale, asked all Americans “to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our Beneficent Father. . . for singular deliverance and blessings.” Thanksgiving was nolonger our “forgotten heritage.” Success was not uncommonto Mrs. Hale. Aside from writing the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” she put the words “domestic science” into our language and helped elevate housekeepingto a professional level. She founded the first day nursery, advocated physical education for women, aided indigent seamen, and crusadedfor public playgrounds, better sanitation, women’s property rights, and a scoreof “radical” causes now part of everydaylife.
