WoMEn’s WorRLbD Cup Atlantic Coast Conference chancellors and presidents will hold a teleconference today amid reports they are ready to invite Boston College to be the league’s 12th team. Miami and Virginia Tech were added to the nine-team conference in June and will begin play in 2004. SPORTS Now it appears the ACC is ready brief In to revisit the addition of Boston College or even Syracuse. Boston College and Syracuse were the Big East schools in the ACC’s original expansion plans, but were voted down in favor of adding the Hurricanes and Hokies. “Tt’s natural to think about Boston College and Syracuse Maax J. U.S.gets some consolation The Associated Press CARSON, Calif. — The U.S. womenleft the World Cup soccer tournament with their heads held high. Led by veterans Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly and Tiffeny Milbrett, the Americans won the third-place game Saturday 3-1 over Canada. It was not the prize they set out for, but it was an impressive display of their talent against one of soccer’s rising nations. “It was very importantto finish this way, whether it was for first, second or third,” Milbrett said. “If there is a game we have to win in a tournament, we want to win.” Before 25,253 at the Home many of whom havesaid they won't play in another World Cup, then saluted the crowd at the sideline, throwing kisses, waving and clapping their hands. Hamm's perfect twisting corner kick was headed home by Shannon Boxx for the winning goal in the 52nd minute. It was the 1,000th goal for the U.S. women. Then Hamm,soccer’sall-time leading goal-scorer who has become a terrific playmaker as well, made a quick restart in the 80th. Her feed eventually found its way to Milbrett in the penalty area and she scored to improve the U.S. record against Canada to 26-3-3. It’s the second time the United States has finished third in the World Cup,also doing it in sliding shot and crashed into goalkeeper Briana Scurry, who also hit the goal post after the ball banged off the post. Lang tested Scurry again moments later, but the American went to the ground to catch the ball. Earlier, Scurry had to soar to barely tip one of Lang’s shots over the net in the 19th minute. Devin Dehlin will have a short drive to work, but he will find far fewer cars in the parking lot. Alan James and Mike Borich are leaving the courses where they learned to playgolf. Those are amongtheeffects of Salt Lake County’s sweeping changes in the managementof its six golf courses. All six head pros will have new assignments in January. Several assistant pros are also moving, and not necessarily accompanying their current bosses. “| hate to leave here;I’ve been here so long,” James said of Mountain View Golf Course in West Jordan, where he was first employed in 1968 to retrieve golf balis from the ponds, Yet “a change really is refreshing to me, I have mixed emotions, but I'm excited.” James is the county’s longesttenured head pro after 12 years at Mountain View. Dehlin recently took over at Old Mill Golf Course, where “you open the doors and everybody showsup,” he said. Attracting golfers is much more difficult at South Moun- tain Golf Club in Draper.“It’s going to be a new challenge for me,” Dehlin said. “Professionally, it'll help me grow.” Sandy resident Jeff Beaudry, a career services consultant for the PGA of America, sees benefits to the changes. “At first blush, I kind oflike it,” he said. “It's probably good for them, and good for the facilities they goto, to have a fresh set of eyes. It’s human nature; weall get in a little bit of a rut.” A possible sideeffect, Beaudry said, is losing the value of relationships the pros have developed with regulars. Some may follow their pro by playing the other course more frequently. Others’ habits may notbe affected. Dehlin is switching with Jerry Brewster. The otherassignments send Borich from Meadow Brook to Mick Riley, Steve Young from Riverbendto Meadow Brook and Todd Meyer from Mick Riley to Mountain View.
