Holm verdict: FLDS Church is mum @ Continued from B1 “In the first place, [prosecutors] are nipping at the heels when they need to go to the head,” said Bestline. After living in the community for years, Bestline self-published a well-documented history based on a 1953 raid by Arizona authorities on the twin polygamous towns of Colorado City and Hildale, just over the Utah-Arizona state line in Washington County. Holm, who worked in Hildale as a police officer, is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 10, but Bestline wonders if the court loss was as disappointing as Holm’s attorneysclaim. Holm “was offered a plea bargain and didn’t take it. These people want a [polygamy]case to take to the [U.S.] Supreme Court to get the country’s polygamy laws overturned. But the Supreme Court is not going to hear the Holm thing. There is nothing con- stitutional aboutit,” said Bestline. “Of course, I’m out of there [Colorado City] now and anything I say is just my opinion.” Dan Barlow, the mayor of Colorado City and the FLDS spokesman, was not available for commentat city offices Friday. Meanwhile, the state’s second most populous city won’t even have a mayoralcontest. West Valley City Mayor Dennis Nordfelt, who was appointed by the City Council last year after then-Mayor Gearld Wright died, is unopposed. Bill Barton, a former state senator, said he considered faith, is a walking encyclopedia ofhistorical facts about the religion that did not even have a name until it became necessary for legal reasons. Bestline and about 20 other homeowners instigated that legal issue in 1987, when they filed a civil rights lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City against the church's financial trustin orderto gettitle to the land their structures occupied. The church, which holds muchof the land in the two towns through its United Effort Plan trust, doles out lots for “worthy” people to build on, but it never relinquishes the property deeds. Bestline said the legal action was taken during a purge by churchofficials, who were evicting families from their houses under the pretext of them not being morally worthy. The federal suit was dismissed several years later butrefiled in 5th District Court as a civil case. The case was resolved in 1999. Underthe resolution, the church can retain the deed to its land if it proceeds with an running for mayor, but decided not to because he is satisfied with Nordfelt’s administration. “He’s pretty popular,” Barton said. “It would be a tough race.” Tribune reporters Thomas Burr and Heather May contributed to this story. ldirr@slitrib.com struggles involving politics and doctrinal issues that have plagued the churchsince 1929, when Lorin Woolley and Joseph Musser began shaping the controversial church. Members have isolated themselves in the communities flanked by the Vermillion Cliffs to the north and vast valleys and plateaus that disappear into the Grand Canyon to the south, and there they practice plural marriage, among otheraspects oftheir faith. Bestline, who joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1992, said marriages of teenage girls arranged by FLDS leaders are a normal practice. “There are a lot of young marriages,” he said. Although he picks his words carefully, makingit clear he does not speak for others, he chuckles about a time several years ago when formerleader Rulon Jeffs, who died in September, told followers at least three separate times to report to an 80-acre field in Colorado City. There, they were told, they would be raised by supernatural powers above the Ward.” earth, protecting the faithful from harm during a great war that would be waged to annihilate the wicked. After the three-day war, the 80 acres would be gently lowered back into place and the believers would go about their mortal business. “Every time, though, the night before it was supposed to happen, Jeffs would cancel the gathering, saying the Lord had given them more time,” said Bestline. People took the raising seriously, said Bestline, stocking up with three-days worth Those in the Second Ward nowcall their denomination The Work of the Church of of food to satiate their appetites while floating lazily over the bloodshed below. The purge caused a schism among FLDS faithful. Those who did not join in the suit and were evicted started a new town nearby, which they named Centennial, Ariz. They started worshiping separately in the “Second Ward,” while those who conducted the purge or were unaffected by it continued to attend what became known as the “First practice polygamy, and that is where Stubbs nowlives with her three children and farms with herfather.
