This year's Memorial Day event was very emotional, with manytributesto victims of Sept. 11 and U.S. soldiers currently serving abroad, Colbert promises they won't be forgotten during “A Capitol Fourth,” though henotesthatthe spirit will be different: “There really hadn't been a 9/11 memorial service for the country, and wefelt we were doing that on Memorial Day. The Fourth of July obviously is a party, but we've asked Russell Watsonto sing ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ and we'll use some (Sept. 11-related) footage there. “I think that’s all we'll do about that, other than bringing the whole country together in celebration,” Colbert says. “Thetribute will be upbeatrather than somberthis time. There will be songslike ‘You're a Grand Old Flag’ and maybe ‘Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean,’ and we'll have footage of great, symbolic flags flying over placeslike the White House.” The combinationoftalents is all-important to Colbert's shows. “Arethawill certainly be doing ‘Respect’ and someof her other hits, but she also wants to do an aria. She’s been looking at one by Handel, and thinkthat'll be kind of a surprise for folks. We'll also havethe bigtribute to Richard Rodgers, with just about everyonein the castinvolved. It’s all-Americanfare that encompassesdifferent things.” DISC FX [SHOW TMC LIFE —— 18 18 18 18 19 19 19 22 576| 576| 21 17 5911 591] 591| 591] mnlntlnlis — ri 23 38 23 27 24 57_['24 29 25 33 25 26 26 51 26 25 27 27 27 23 ag 55 28 28 - 22 20 15 60 16 % 33 33 “The opening number,” Bostwick reports, “will be a medley about the Americanflag.
