Dr. Douglas Jacobs, a Harvard professor of psychiatry, has been trying to reach those people through a psychiatric “fishnet”called the National Depression Screening Day. This year,it takes place on Oct. 5. On that day, people who think they may suffer from depression,as well as those who suspectit in their loved ones, can visit any of 3000 sites to be screened. Last year, 90,000 people soughthelp at these sites—and nearly 70% tested positive for depression. “Atthe site we can make an evaluation,” says Dr. Jacobs. Of those who were told at the screening that they might be depressed and needed full evaluation, he notes, 65% sought treatment. Untreated, hopelessness can lead to suicide, Nearly 31,000 people commit suicide in the U.S.annually; 2000 are under 19. “An estimated 10% of people with untreated depression will die of suicide,” says Dr. Jacobs.
