Show c8 Be TheSalt Lake Tribune UTAH - Advocates Cite Shortage Of Child Care in Utah BY HEATHER MAY THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. Utah child advocates consider child care to be the bellwether of how youth are faring. They say lack of adequate supervision can lead children to get pregnant, abuse drugs or harm themselves and others. Using that criteria, life as a Utahchild isn’t good. There are « 142,100 children who need care and just 35, 187 slots in licensed facilities That is just one indicator of howchildren aredoing, according to Utah Children, a statewide child advocacy group. It released its annual report Friday that tracks about 30 indicators of well-being including birth weights, injuries, deaths, child abuse and highschool drop- outrates. ly all of the indicators are affected by avaailability of affordablechild care, say advocates. They expect the problems to continue as more Utahns leave welfare, enterthejobforce andare forced to leave their children unsupervised. ‘There are fewchild-carefacilities toaid mothers who must work night shifts and there aren't enough attEHAUle after-school prograt i ve seen sixth-grade girls delivering babi $ . simply bethey e nothing else to said Flora Weggeland, with Utah Children The “lonesome hours” after EUs hiidren homes and be June Cleaver.” Many children areat a disad. vantagefrom the start The percentage of women who regularly visited a doctor during the first three months of preg. nancy declined since 1994, to 79.7 percent four years later.
