Show cigar Daan 8 The Salt Lake Tribune UTAH Sunday, December 26, 1999 / Hatch Keeps Campaign Optimism He says good showings if Iowa, N.H.are key ‘THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Sen. Orrin Hatch sayshe is go‘ing to need more moneyto carry his presidential campaign to California. ‘To do that, he will need to make & showing against the other bottom runners in the Iowa caucuses Jan. 24 and the New Hampshire Presidential primary Feb.1. Texas Gov. George W. Bush remains the Republican frontrunner, followed by Arizona Sen. John McCain and magazine publisher Steve Forbes. That leaves Hatch with Gary Bauer and Alan Keyes in the GOP 4-5-6 spots, all with single-digit numbers in the Republican presidential preference polls. ‘Thus far Hatch’s campaign has raised only about$2.3 million. He also has qualified for another $1 million in federal matching funds. However, he agrees that is not enough to compete in the California presidential primary in early March. “The rule of thumbis you need about $10 million in California,” he said Thursday. “But,if I do well in Iowa and I do well in New Hampshire, the money will come,” he said. “We've run an inexpensive campaign and we're still in there. We're not to the point yet where webelieve we have to say yes or no” to whether his campaign continues. Hatch said the campaign has enabled him to present Utah val- ues in the national forum of the presidential debates. “Win or lose, I'm making an impact. I’m carrying Utah values and people are accepting them,” he said. Earlier this month Hatch said thatif he were elected, one of the things he would do during hisfirst day in the Oval Office would be to rescind President Clinton’s executive order creating southern Utah's Grand Escalante National Monument. However, Hatch said Thursday that did not mean the monument would then disappear and thathis action would be more symbolic to show “what happened there was a tragedy.” Congress already has acted several times to recognize the monument, including giving Utah $50 million in cash and $13 million from the saleofcoal leases. In addition, the federal government and the state exchanged more than 300,000 acres of land in connection with the monument. Try Us Out For A Week Absolutely Free! However, “I think the boundaries would have to be changed. Weneed to do something with those lands, but a national monumentis not necessarily best” for all 1.7 million acres, he said.
