Tom described as Hitchcockian (not a misplaced comparison, since Freddie Myles (Philip Seymour Hoffman). But when Dickie, who coliects and sheds friends and lovers like articles of clothing, ake ingratiates himself to Dickie, seeming to share Dickie’s love of jazz music and spending Papa Greenleaf’s money. “Everybody should have one talent,” Dickie says to Tom. “What's yours?” Tom’s reply is more honest than Dickie suspects: “Forging signatures, telling lies, impersonating people.” But Tom’s truetalentis insin- uating himself into this world of theidle rich, making friends not only with Dickie and Marge but with the vivacious Meredith Logue (“Elizabeth’s’’ Cate money and pedigree. The lush settings, extravagant costumes and gorgeous use ofItalii.« locations (in Rome, Venice, Naples and elsewhere) speak to a Helly- wood ofdays gone bye. The crew is stellar, with nearly everyone — director Anthony Minghella, executive producer Sydney Pollack, cinematographer John Seale,edi- tor Walter Murch,production de- signer Roy Walker, costume designer Ann Roth, composer Gab- riel Yared, and Paltrow and Damon — havingatleast one Oscar ontheshelf. Minghelia — making hisfirst movie since the Oscar-winning “The English Patient” — adapts Patricia Highsmith’s novel with a seductive creepiness mosteasily Hitchcock did similar wonders with Highsmith’s “Strangers on a to make us drop our guard,before “The Talented Mr. Ripley”is the frequentuse of mirrors to capture Tom Ripley from several angles at once. The inirrors — in additionto paying homage to another great thriller, Orson Welles’ “The Lady From Shanghai” — perfectly define Ripley's character. Ripley, as achingly portrayed by Damon,is so desperate to belong that he becomes a chameleon, reflecting whatever traits those near him wantto see.
