For the ultimate excitement, Filmmaker continues to blend his unique brand of magic the film crew journeys past Tromso, Norway, 200 miles beyond the Arctic Circle, to a mountain that plunges nearly By CHARLIE MEYERS SPECIAL CONTRIBUTOR With a resounding shout for freedom, the Warren Miller movie soars into the nation’s theaters for the 49th consecutive year, an October-throughDecembertourthat heralds the beginning of snowriding season for hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts. The name, Freeriders,is vividly descriptive of the soaring spirit inherentin a film whose stars seem to spend as much time high above the snow as they do * actually on it. This theme reaches an apex with a wild simultaneousflip by nine famous aerialists, led by Olympic champion Jonny Moseley. “Soclety tells us there's no such thing as a free ride, but there's plenty of us whoare free riders," Miller quips in the poignant, often humorous, tone thatis as familiar as the sound of steel edges on snow. The launchalso includes highflying Lindsey Van, who, at age 13, already has jumped the length of a football field. Snowboard ace Craig Kelly goes airborne through the chutes of the Lizard Range in The name, Freeriders, is vividly descriptive of the soaring spirit inherent in a film whose stars seem to spend as much time high above the snow as they do onit. 5,000 vertical feetstraightinto a narrowfjord. There, beneath the midnight sun, a jolly band of skiers, riders and free-heelers frolic and flip down a supersteep slope where the slightest slip seemingly will take them straight into the ocean. Bad for the bindings we're told. This patented tour through the world's mostfabulous ski places also joins mountain guide Eric Bellin — whose forebears came to the French Alps nearly 300 years ago -—— on a highly personalized snowboard tourof the legendary cliffs of Chamonix. The tour also travels below the equator to Portillo, Chile, where extreme ski champion Dave Swanwick cavorts amid the wild mountains, and wilder weather of the Andes. "It's always snowing somewhere in the world,” Miller intones with the unbridled opti- mism that comes with knowing this is completely true. As always is the case with these films, the tempo bounces wildly from such exotic extremes to outrageous humor, even the absurd, Thus weareinvited to hoot at the Dummy Downhill Race at Stowe, Vt., where ersatz contestants sometimes explodein mid-air. The hilarity includes the annu- al shovel race at Angel Fire, N.M., the Spring Splash at Winter Park, Colo., and a spirit- ed,if not spiritual, segment with a group of skiing sisters from a local convent, “Nuns on the Runs,” at Ski Schweitzer, Idaho. No Warren Miller film would be complete without an ample serv- ing of deep powder. This sea- son's quadruple dip comes from Steamboat, Colo.; The Canyons, Utah; Jackson Hole, Wyo.; and a sparkling segment under the lights at Alpental, Wash. Fittingly, the movie heads north again for a grand finale that includes the dizzying colors of Whistler/Blackcomb, B.C., and the incomparable chutes of Valdez, Alaska. Even the finest free ride has to end somewhere. Graceful and daring, the skiers featured in Warren Miller's Freeriders have mastered their craft like few others.
