Show TheSalt Lake Tribune, Sunday, November 1, 1998 An Open Letter to the Citizens of Salt Lake County With this year’s election only a couple of days away, | wantto again thank both the citizens of Salt Lake County and the people in professional law enforcement who are supporting me as the Sheriff of Salt Lake County. Leading oneof Utah’s largest law enforcement agencies is the equivalent of running a large company. We have more than 1100 employees, millions of dollars in equipment and a 75million dollar budget. The city police chiefs, other law enforcementleadersin the valley, a great majority of deputies, line officers andcivilian employees support me because| have proven that | am an effective leader and manager. | have shownthe value of having a vision and mission, and then strategically planningto fulfill them. Together, you and | have decreased violent crime. You are safer in your neighborhoods andplaces of work than you were a few years ago. | have put more deputies on the streets. | have increased the number ofcorrectional officers in preparation of opening the new metropolitan jail about this time next year. | have increasedjail space to give officers the option of taking criminals and violators to jail when necessary. | have modernized the Sheriff's Office into one of the most progressive and besttrained law enforcement agencies in the western United States. | have improved the pay of deputies. And | have built strong partnerships with the communities and municipalities that we serve. If elected next Tuesday,| will continue myefforts to cooperatively share services with other law enforcement agencies. We have made great strides in the sharing of communications, records management and investigations. | will continue to strategically plan for the future which includes the Winter Olympics, growth and the crime that accompanies growth. | will continue the great work we are doing in our schools, teaching our children the perils of gang membership and drug abuse. | will continue my efforts to professionalize the Sheriff's Office. | will insure that our jail capacity meets our needs. And will continue to use modern technology to the benefit of taxpayers. | have kept my promisesin the past, and | will continue to keep them in the future. Manychallenges face the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office and the citizens of the County during the next four years. | have the qualifications, experience and intense work ethic needed to lead the Sheriffs Office into the nextmillennium. lam excited about the chance to continue my partnership with you as yourSheriff, and | ask for your vote on November3rd.
