If he plays either card, South makes his game. East is forced to win his singleton spade queen and is out of safe leads. Whichever red suit East leads gives South a ruff and sluff and South loses only one spadetrick. There are several ways to avoid South's trap. One wayis for East to unload his spade queen under dummy’s ace. Thisisn’t a talk-showhost Of course, NBC eventually moved past Carvey — the “Late Night” job ended up with Conan O'Brien — and Carveyeventually moved past “Saturday Night Live,” makinga series of dopey movies until turn- ing up ontelevision again two weeks ago with his spring comedyseries on ABC. The half-hour sketch comedyis seen Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. on KTVX- Channel 4 The first and most-publicized joke of Carvey’s showis that each week a major corporate sponsor paysfor the “privilege” of having its namein thetitle along with Carvey’s, as in “The Taco Bell Dana Carvey Comedy Show” East South West North 29 ie Pass ae “weak two-bid av Pass Opening lead: Heart deuce BID WITH THE ACES South holds: @A862 wea @A63 @7654 South 1v 2NT 14 ? So the sponsor pulled out, as was widely reported (including in this space, last week). Carvey hadto lovethis, because it framed his new half-hour comedyas a rebellious, maverick prime-time program. rather than the long set of semi-lamesketchesittrulyis. That's not to say that Carveycan't be funny. It’s just that he’s got his three or four favorite comedy moves — his impresse- sions — and those are the ol’ reliables he goes to, time and time again. An example was the contrived audience Q&A session Carvey conducted to open his second show (after an extended tongue-in-cheek songand-dance numbersaluting Mug). Mysteriously enough. random audience questions Potential hen of the week: “Date- line NBC.” Anyone missing the informedinterviewing style of NBC's Bob Costas (formerly of the network's “Later") can catch his act with his regular “Dateline” interviews. Tonight: actor Steve Martin JOHN YOUNGREN called for Carvey to answer questionsin his George Bush and Hans and Franz voices the saved Johnny Carson until later). If it led to laughs, it also led to the question: Is there anything else this guy can do? Maybe that’s why Carv y has been wise enough to assemble a fairly versatile repersketch comedy tory group behind hi can't be a one-main affair. So. by the second week of The Dana Carvey Show,” other players were turning in a nice parody of Entertainment Tonight” and oft-imitated O.J. Simpson prosecutors Chris Darden and Marcia Clark. There was also a clever bit spoofing Comedy Central, with fiveyear-old kids riffing (“You're a doody head!"’) in the style of their comic elders, in front of that familiar comedy-club brick wall. And, while Carvey turned up just enough to offer fresh impressions — Casey Kasem and Charles Grodin, both winningly done, though Grodin is somethingofa self- parody, anyway — perhapsit’s no surprise that some of the funniest moments came when he was nowhere to be seen. I'll probably keep watching Carvey, because it’s worth at least a laugh every Tuesday. It’s also a show that has no competition at 8:30 p.m., save for the lame “The John Larroquette Show ” And it may be most worth watching simply to discover whether there’s more to Carvey's schtick than Bush, Perot and The Church Lady John Youngren works in advertising in Salt Lake City.
