A The victim said Mark Hartle, 29, was one of five men who raped her after she had passed out in the bathroomof the Casablanca Restaurant in Gouverneur in October 1991. Therestaurant's bartender, GregoryStreeter, pleaded guilty, received probationand hadtestified against Hartle in thefirst of an expected four separatetrials. The victim began sobbingafter the verdict was read, and cried out, “No, he raped me!” as she was led away. The six-man, six-woman jury took about four hoursto find Hartle innocent of first-degree rape charges. Hartle, of Gouverneur, had faced up to 25 yearsin prison if convicted. “This changes nothing,” Joseph Mahoney, a spokesman for Atty. Gen.Dennis Vacco,said about the verdict, “She's a victim ofa brutal rape and we will proceed accordingly with the other prosecu- ie tions.” The case drew national attention whenthelocal district attor- iE neyallowed the five men to plea bargain to a misdemeanor charge of sexual misconduct in June 1993 andreceive a $750fine.
