' 54 t 5 W - S i J 4 I f V I f r v 4 Car On the Home Grounds Improvement ifcliPPMPH— nW!lwiW f ad mm mwmmnr ''f e: j J : &4 A ' c if v i " “ Is- i r " ' j t f W— S R Boswell left and Joe Parrish Utah and Salt Lake County agricultural agents hear Wes Soulier explain one of the exhibits an the train Shaffer By Elwood VIAC Eitensioa Editor OME gardeners and lawn fanciers in Utah will have a chance later this month to get free beaiity lessons for doing a job on their home grounds At the same r train ride without ever time they can get a face-liftin- g two-hou- leaving town and they won’t have to pay a cent for the ticket ' This “quick trip” to improved home grounds will be offered during the 1955 tour of the Union Pacific Railroad Company’s agricultural improvement car Between Monday January 24 and Wednesday February 9 it will stop at 14 towns in 11 counties through the Beehive state where the U P has trackage The tour which is sponsored Jointly by the UP railroad and the Utah State Agricultural College Extension Service will extend from Brigham City on the north to Cedar City on the south Wesley D Soulier U P agricultural agent In Salt Lake City will be in charge of the car throughout its trip The housewives of Utah are getting special attention this year The car’s theme “Home Grounds Improvement for Better Living” should attract them as well at the farmers and town husbands who want more beautiful surroundings for their homes In past years the car’s theme has been agricultural highlighting such subjects as dairy insect control livestock management and ' weed control n by specialists movie films and exhibits of home grounds will all help carry the message of more pleasant surroundings for ' rural and urban homes All interested persons wherever they live are Invited to attend a meeting during the car’s annual visit to Utah( Four experts will speak at various stops but ' they didn’t obtain their degrees at a beauty school— they’re specialists in landscaping floriculture and TLKS forestry Kenji Shiozawa assistant professor of landscaping architecture at USAC will accompany the car ail through its three-weetrip His talks will cover such topics as landscaping fundamentals k ' Jonyory ?3 1?35 varieties of shrubs and other plants lawn planting and care disease and insect control in all types of plants and use of local and imported shrubs in home7 grounds plantings With the car during its first week when it stops at Brigham City Coalville Morgan Ogden and Tooele will be Otto Riethmann floriculture instruc-tor at USAC He will discuss topics in bis special field of bedding plants perennials annuals house plants and bulbs Dr G Alvin Carpenter assistant extension director at USAC will also be on the program during this opening W’eek Young University will contribute a BRIGHAM Ernest Reimschiissel during the car’s stops at Nephi Spanish Fork Provo American Fork Sandy and Murray An in- - Traiii Schedule slructor in Landscape Architecture at the Y he will help Prof Shiozawa teach the latest beauty aids for lawns flower gardens trees and shrubs and indoor plants Grant Harris forestry and range management specialist with the USAC Extension Service W'Hl lend his training and experience to a discussion of ground covers shade trees and windbreaks along with the regular landscaping talks during the car’i last week in Utah It will visit Delta Milford and Cedar City before crossing the state border for two days in Caliente and Logandale Nevada Extension Agents will conduct the COUNTY the various counties visited by the car agents who bold faculty rank at USAC give information throughout the year to all state residents who contact them on home improvement and other phases of agriculture and homemaking Three publications are being specially written agronomy experts at the state college in Logan for this educational tour These leaflets will be distributed for the first time on the agricultural car: Extension Leaflet No 1 "Home Lawns fur Utah” by Louis A Jensen Extension agronomist Extension Leaflet No 2 “Soil Management Around the Home” by Paul D Christensen Extension soil conservationist and a mimeographed publication (to be printed later) "Control of Chlorosis” by D Wynne Thorne head of the USAC agronomy department the car will visit only 11 of Utah’ ALTHOUGH residents of other areas are welcome to afternoon and evening sessions Most morning meetings are reserved for high school by soil and Lime-induce- d -
