These seekers of the primitive not the jet-slife hedonists of the Riviera and the yacht cruises are closest in motivation and practices to the origins of the contemporary nudist movement. It was in Germany, Switzerland and Austria toward the end of the last century that naturism was bom, the idea that shedding ones clothes in dissent from the urbanized textile society would move one closer to nature. The German word for it was Nacktkultur. The naked culture was one aspect of a philosophy that was tied in with hiking, camping, gymnastics, vegetarianism and temperance. There were also ideological overtones of AND THEN THERE et ; ; t : 1 I . . t ! t 1 1 1 1 . back-to-basic- s, ir pacifism, antiauthoritarianism, egalitarianism and, at least in Germany, nationalism. The first nudist camps sprang up in Germany early in this century. Inevitably there were disputes; it was argued that one might be attracted to nudism without going in for naturist austerity, and also that one could attempt to find a more natural way of life without taking off all ones clothes. PHILOSOPHERS SUCH as Bertrand Russell, psychologists and psychoanalysts, artists and writers became interested in nudism. After World War II heightened awareness of the natural environment and such threats to it as cultists. pollution favored the open-ai- r colonies and nudist naturist Many had long been operating across the continent and in Britain, and skinnydip-pin- g had become a European teen-ag- e fad when the topless Riviera mores hit the tabloids in the 1960s: The code word was St. Tropez. The rather sudden notoriety of the French seaside town southwest of Cannes, soon heavily overcrowded during the season, was to a large extent due to Brigitte Bardot. The actress had been spending holidays in her villa there, and the photographers zoomed on her and the groupies that began flocking to St. Tropez from provincial towns in West Germany, Holland and Sweden. THE EUROPEAN CAMPING craze and the mobility of traveling by motor trailer also contributed to the spread of nudism. The proliferation of nudity in advertising for consumer goods, the movies and the press, and the exposure of the public to pornography have silenced many earlier objections to nude bathing. . TOTAL NAKEDNESS on many beaches around the Mediterranean belongs to a hazy area between two main trends in the European nudist movement. One is being practiced in a vast system of nudist and naturist colonies, especially in France, West Germany and Yugoslavia, where accommodations range from the spartan to the luxurious. The other school is free or wild nude bathing in locaremote bays and other tions in countries that either permit closed naturist camps or theoretically regard all nudism as ' a punishable offense. PROSPECTOR New York Times Writer hard-currenc- CRUISE AIRLINE RESERVATIONS 355-558- 5 by Paul Hoffman THE STATE TOURIST board of Greece, a country where young athletes of either sex used to exercise naked in die gymnasium 2,500 years ago, has just come out strongly for continued toleration of nude bathing, and has called for new legislation to designate special beaches for the practice. The tourism authority denounced a current local crusade against nudism as an agitation by a few hypocrites and that might give religious fanatics Greece a bad name in the world and y cause heavy losses in earnings. The statement from a Government agency in Athens reflects the ambiguous status of nude bathing not only in Greece but also in other nations around the Mediterranean. In Greece, as in Italy and Spain, public nudism is illegal, yet is being practiced on a large and growing scale. Elsewhere on the Continent nude bathers have long been accepted as part of the summer scenery, particularly in France, Yugoslavia, West Germany and the Netherlands. d Nudity enthusiasts from northern Europe start migrating to the south early in the year. Their way of spending vacations without any clothes on for most of the day appears to scandalize remarkably few people in the host nations. Nudist organizations, however, advise their members to stay away from Cyprus, Malta, Israel, where Turkey and all Arab countries religious and moral values are incompatible with nudism. European nudists say also that Communist regimes are prudish, although some generally taboos seem to have been lifted recently in Czechoslovakia and in the enclaves for foreign vacationers on the beaches of Bulgaria and Rumania. in Greece THE CONTROVERSY comes at a time when nudism and naturism appear to be developing from a scatter of ideologically motivated sects, small local groups and snobbish coteries into a mass movement with a strong impact on contemporary habits. After a hesitant and rainy spring, the summer of 1980 sees many thousands in maybe hundreds of thousands Europe baring their bodies on beaches, in swimming pools, at Alpine lakes and along mountain brooks. They include the young women in monokinis promenading in St. Tropez, the yachting tycoons who ask their guests to leave bathing suits at home, the patrons of the French nudopolis compounds with boutiques and fancy restaurants, inhabitants of Yugoslavias many Government-sponsored naturist colonies and the naked West German business executives and their companions on the fashionable island of Sylt, north of Hamburg. In some bathing concessions and beaches in Italy, Spain and Portugal where a naked man might cause a sensation, women take off their bikini tops while lying in the sun without causing any commotion. The foreigner is advised not to try to start any trends, but to watch what the local people, or at least some of them, are doing. In the capital of Switzerland, Berne not the most swinging city in the world an effort for a referendum to outlaw topless bathing recently collapsed. Secretaries who work for the government and foreign embassies thus may continue using their lunch break to fortify their topless tans in the local swimming pools..'.'
