Show Four Greats Inducted Into Football Shrine The emotion of joining the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday proved too much for Bob Lilly. The Dallas Cowboys great broke down and cried twice during his CANTON, Ohio (AP) acceptance speech. Im awful sorry, Lilly told the audience encircling the Shrines steps after he fought back tears. Lilly joined Herb Adderley, Jim Otto and David Deacon Jones as the latest enductees in the Hall of Fame, pushing the total of immortals enshrined there to 106. Lilly, a defensive tackle, first broke when he talked of his father and of former college Coach Abe Martin, both of whom are dead. he This is the toughest part, warned the audience. Lilly paused to collect himself and the crowd applauded. Still sniffing, Lilly said 1 got all the attention when I was growing up. I appreciate the fact my family continues to love me. Later, a more composed Lilly said. All of us are here today for one reason. We played on teams that were winners. To sum it up, I deserve just a small part of this award today. It took teamwork Dallas Coach Tom Landry presented Lilly and said: There wont be another Bob Lilly in my lifetime. Not only was he a great football player, but he is one of the finest individuals I have ever known. At 21, he became the youngest batting champion in American League history. He performed as if bom to hit and field. And now he has made the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first try. In contrast, there is Duke Snider, who also enters baseballs shrine Sunday. It took Snider 11 years to nke the Hall, even though he was just as accomplished a ballplayer as Kaline. Although both Kaline and Snider made the game look ever so simple, neither found it all that automatic. Baseball was never easy for me, said Kaline, the star right fielder of the Detroit Tigers for 22 seasons. Everybody thought I was a natural but they just didnt know. They didnt know about the nights Id take a bat through the lobby and swing it in front of a mirror to find out what I was doing wrong. I wasn't as good a player as I I wished Id been, he added. strived to be the best but I fell short. Kaline had a .297 lifetime average with 3,007 hits and 399 home runs. In 1955, he won the AL batting championship with a .340 average, making him the youngest by one day over ever to capture the Ty Cobb league title. Snider must have been wondering if he ever would get to Cooperstown. I'd been sweating it for 11 said the onetime star years, center fielder with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. I was worried if 1 didnt make it this year I never would make it.
