Show 1 D . f I R YTN G " ABORTION IN COWS. By Dr. David Robcrs. Wisconsin State Veterinarian, Contagious abortion in cows docs not bring about as great a loss in the actual death of the calf as it does in the ruination of the cow as a milk producer , Another noticeable symptom of contagious abortion in a herd is the shortage of milk in cows that have not aborted but this is an indication that they arc as much infected as are the cows that have actually aborted. A number of barren cows in a herd is another symptom of contagious, abortion. This condition docs not exist without a good cause and it this .is thoroughly investigated it will soon be discovered that the barrenness barren-ness is due to contagious abortion, even if the barren cows have never aborted. The disease of abortion brings on an acid secretion or a catarrhal condition con-dition which prevents conception, or if a cow should conceive in this condition con-dition she is very apt to abort at an oarly stage of gestation for the reason rea-son that the germs of abortion become be-come very active as soon as conception concep-tion takes place in a barren cow. The-, cow may or she may not go over one' period of heat, then come in heat again after having aborted the foetus when it is so small it could hardly be noticed, even if the attendant w?s looking for it. Another condition exists in contagious contag-ious abortion which often deceives the owner of the herd. The herd may or may not lose many calves during the year by abortion but calves will die one after another at different differ-ent ages, say from birth to a month old, from Calf Cholera or scours. This is a positive symptom of contagious contag-ious abortion doing its deadly work in another form. o . |
