| Show THE MORMONS john T caine M C will accept thanks for the report of the com committee it on territories on the admission of utah by a perusal of the report we see no feasible fea feasible reason why utah is if j not justly entitled to admission as a state the territorial government has adopted one of the very best nonsectarian non don sectarian systems of education that exists in any state or territory in these united states the per cent of illiteracy is below the average of the country they have more days average duration of school each year than has any pacific state the articles of their faith are given and not one word compelling polygamy can be found in them polygamy is only permissible their yearly productions duct ions from all industries are over from the report repert we are inclined inell n ed to think that those people are abused by a less thrifty and less intelligent class of jealous bigots who are envious of their success and are desirous of having the good homes of these gormong mormons confiscated for no other reason only that of giving those lazy idle vagabonds that are there calling themselves non mormon homes they never earned nor have they any disposition to earn them that there are such villains in this country clothed in a garb of respectability moving in good society and occupying lucrative positions under our government and in in the churches is a fact that cannot be denied in this report the commissioners give tile the ideas of both sides and it appears there is a want of good faith in the mormons cormons ar expressed by the opponents to the admission of the we have been in that territory sev eral times and have spent several days in studying their institutions and people and from what we saw and could gather by actual observation it has been and is now our opinion ion that all this ado and persecution is altogether wrong and uncalled cal ledfor for in fact it has no real basis only that of envy and of conspiracy to rob an industrious people out of their earnings A number of fanatical shar pers without honor er r principle went there to tomake make trouble for those people believing they could outwit the mormon leaders and lead them into cunningly cunning lk and knavishly devised traps and incite the masses of our people who are not informed concerning those people and through them influence congress to confiscate their property that they and theirs might revel upon the spoils we have heard deceased brigham young mr cannon and several others speak I 1 and men of broader or more common sense ideas concerning DID T that 1 I which pertained to the welfare e of their people we never e heard very few men have ever lived who could hold bold influence t and successfully colonize so many people and be so much loved and respected respect cd by them all as was brigham young this recent persecution of those people only shows that there are those still living who are go as ready to persecute as in ages agee ai past when we take into consideration the ignorant classes largely composed of foreigners of which the mormon church is made up from it reflects great credit upon the teachers of their public schools and their school system to find only per cent of illiteracy which is the same as connecticut for industry sobriety honesty religious devotion and virtue there are no people as a class in this or any other country to compare with them in all these qualifications there is a town in idaho of 1600 people all mormons cormons Mor mons and theres there is not a saloon or gambling house or any other place where intoxicating liquor is sol sold dand and governor stevenson of idaho says he is informed this is the case in all towns where these people have exclusive control there are in utah mor mons and about non mor mons any class of people who are not americanized christianized Christiani zed or civilized enough to drink whisky lie gamble and steal in these united states might b t expect e hect to be persecuted and a have ave their ir honestly earned property ro arty confiscated coffis ted by the popular and I 1 leading ing classes who are addicted addic to drunkenness lying gambling and stealing this persecution which was begun with only a flimsy excuse is reacting and would were the class who originated it not so well backed up or so numerous recoil greatly in favor of the mormons cormons Mor mons we are not in favor of polygamy by any means and believe it is best beet for both sexes to be paired only and if they are not amicably mated or paired we believe in the law of divorce but the persecution of the mormons cormons by people who are no better than those they are persecuting is altogether wrong we heard henry ward beecher once say with reference to their persecution that they ha I 1 better be let alone when the people and congress are better informed concerning those people they will as they should be admitted as a state into this great union of states sierra valley gal cal leader lyalle |
