actively amon among g them recently having been released from that duty but he could testify of their faith in god and good feeling toward the work of the lord also could bear witness of their honesty and worthiness such of them as had come within the gospel pale and to whom his labors had extended the speaker had lately visited his relatives out in the world and found some of them friendly toward the truth and others not so he had discovered in his experience that those whom he had thought would receive the gospel had rejected it 14 al fc v a a while those of whom he had little or no hope had believed and obeyed it it was a day of great opposition to the work of god for satan knew that his time was sh shor tand he would use every method to seduce the saints from the path of right but trials would only make them strong if they bore them patiently and successfully cess fully one great promise to the faithful was that they should assist the Lama to build up the center stake of zion and inherit the promised land he hb wanted to realize that promise he felt well in the work had no fault to find with the priesthood estwood or the Saint sand wanted to live humble and pure and inherit eternal life in the kingdom of god ELDER JAS E TALMAGE first touched upon the object of the priesthood meetings he said there was a great variety of duties and labors incumbent on the servants of god as evidenced by the different reports rende rendered and yet weare we are all bound together by one common hope and purpose it was the work of god that was being performed by the farmer the carpenter the builder as well as by the preacher of the gospel and those who labor in spiritual things we have organizations and institutions set on foot for the training of the youth such as the schools that have been established in our midst for the education of the children of zion w whose hose future is destined to be glorious the lord declares that th it it is impossible for men to be saved in ignorance by which the speaker understood such ignorance as they had the opportunity of removing matters of knowledge were matters of god and greater facilities for learning were extant today than ever before choice literature could be obtained very cheaply and the day had gone by when books had to be chained to the public stands to be studied only by a few the speaker dwelt upon the condition past and present of the latter day saints college of this stake and also its prospects for the future he asked the support of the brethren present presen t for that institution the object of which was to make good latter day saints of those who were not so and better ones of those who were good saints already not only money aid but f faith ath and prayer were necessary to sustain such an institution he predicted the future success of these schools for they had been instituted by proper auth authority arity and were deserving of the blessing of god and support of his people PRESIDENT C W PENROSE endorsed what he had heard as being true and faithful faith fil he believed in the institution of which brother talmage had bad spoken and hoped that all would sustain it he read a letter from the presiding bishopric embodying excerpts from an epistle of the first presidency enc in relation to donations and offerings for the support of the poor and added that if it was the desire of the stake presidency that tte tle instructions therein contained should be faithfully carried out in the spirit and meaning thereof if we do not look after the poor we cannot hope for the blessings of the lord the lord says that they who neglect to impart of their substance for this purpose shall lift up their eyes in hell being in torment tithing was partly for the support of the po poor orand and the saints should pay their tithing also and pay it as tile they receive it week by week or month by mouth month and not reserve it au all until the end of the year let every man be as benevolent as his means will allow the lord loves those who are liberal to the poor espe claley if they do it modestly without boasting and ostentation and he who seeth in secret will reward openly for all the good
